Margaret Hargreaves, of South Pasadena, Calif., says that, although al-though there is no such thing as a formula for color planning, there are certain groups of colors that go best with diiferent settings and styles. Miss Hargreaves Har-greaves says: "On an open, relatively treeless tree-less site, use lighter, sharper colors. The purpose is to make a house stand out as an individual indi-vidual unit, distinct in its own right." The color stylist says that a site rich in trees and other natural natu-ral landscaping needs siding and roofing colors in relation to this background. She suggests grayed, subtle colors, such as Home Buyer Can Be Sure Of Insulation Looking for a house to buy? Here are seven questions and answers about insulation you should know when you inspect any house. They'll help you judge whether you would live comfortably in it and whether it would be economical to run: 1. What areas are insulated? Outside walls and ceilings should always be insulated. In base-mentless base-mentless houses there should be floor insulation over crawl spaces or around the edges of a concrete con-crete slab. Insulation forms a tight blanket around house living liv-ing spaces. It keeps heat in during dur-ing winter, out in summer. 2. How much insulation? A 6-inch 6-inch thickness of mineral wool in the ceiling, 4 inches in walls, and 2 inches in floors where necessary nec-essary is recommended if a house is electrically heated or air conditioned. con-ditioned. At least 4 inches in the ceiling, 3 inches in . walls, and 2 inches in floors is recommended recom-mended for houses with conventional conven-tional heating systems. 3. How can proper application be checked? Although much insulation in-sulation i3 hidden, it's possible to inspect attic or attached garage ga-rage insulation. If there is crawl space, go in and look. 4. Is insulation tightly applied? ap-plied? Staples used in application applica-tion of batts or blanket insulation insula-tion shouldn't be more than 6 inches apart. 5. Is insulation complete? Look for gaps in insulation. Odd-shaped Odd-shaped and small spaces should be insulated. Insulation should be brought snugly up to electrical elec-trical boxes, wiring, and pipes. 6. Is the vapor barrier properly prop-erly installed? Insulation should have its vapor barrier toward the heated-in-winter side of walls and ceilings. The vapor barrier should be snugly applied. 7. Is the space over ceiling insulation ventilated? Ceiling insulation in-sulation works better if the space between the inside surface of the roof and the outside surface of the insulation is ventilated. Louvers under eaves or at gabl ends of the roof make a hous more comfortable. A CHRONICLE CLASSIFIED PAYS BIG DIVIDENDS ADVERTfSIL'S HELPS YOU UVE BETTER for LESS 0 "s. Light blue, green, white, soft gray. These make excellent roofing colors and all are available in asphalt shingles. These colors also can be used for siding, but should harmonize with, and not match, the roof color. Colonial. Use grayed-down, muted colors. Good choices are grays, blues, yellow beiges, and yellow-greens. Farmhouse, Provincial. Use casual, earthy colors to suit the rustic, country-style of living usual in this type of house. Soft-brown blends of asphalt shingles are good for the roof, while siding can be in natural wood tones, or colors like deep, soft red, brown, or yellow. Period Opens for Acreage Reserve Spring Sign-Up Farmers who have a wheat allot ment are eligible for the 1958 Spring Wheat Acreage Reserve, providing they normally produced spring wheat and have not planted their wheat allotment to wheat in the fall of 1957. The Acreage Reserve is that part of the Soil Bank Program which allows farmers to retire part or all of their wheat allotment and the producer is compensated while his land is out of production. The pur pose of the program is to reduce surpluses and help farmers adjust to the production of other crops. The sign-up period for the Spring Wheat Acreage Reserve is from January 13, 1958, to March 7, 1958. The sign-up period for the Con servation Reserve phase of the Soil Bank Program is now under way. This program allows for . farmers to retire their land which normally produces soil 'bank base crops, which generally speaking means all crops raised on the farm except hay, and provides for the seeding of such land to grasses applicable to the soil. The contracts run for periods of 5 or 10 years. Farmers with an old contract or j those who anticipate signing a new contract must abide by several basic regulations provided In the contract. These Include harvesting a crop on designated acres, pasturing, pastur-ing, or harvesting in excess of permitted per-mitted acres are violations which could cause a forfeiture of the total payment plus a fifty-percent penalty. pen-alty. The breaking-out of new land and allowing noxious weeds to spread are violations with a similar simi-lar penalty. The effectiveness of the program depends entirely on the participation of the farmers and the compliance with the program pro-gram regulations.
