Look both ways " This timely traffic tip to pedes trians is part of the November traffic safety program of the American Fork Police Dept. intended in-tended to keep pedestrians alert as they walk along the city streets and highways. "Walking is a full-time job, if you are to walk safely," said Chief Mercer, and pedestrians must stay alert so they don't get hurt. "In fact, the older you are, the more careful you must be. The pedestrian death rate for persons 65 years and older is more than four times the national average, and the rate for persons 45 to 64 years old is next highest." This is an especially dangerous time of the year for pedestrians, according to Mr. Mercer. He pointed out that the most important im-portant single reason for the seasonal variations in pedestrian death totals is the greatly increased in-creased danger after nightfall, and fall and winter mean earlier darkness. Mr. Mercer urged all pedestrians pedestri-ans to obey traffic signals and signs, to cross streets only at intersections in-tersections and to stay within the crosswalks. "Remember," he said, "safe walking pays it lengthens days!" THE LEIII SUN, LEHI, UTAH John A.
