Poultry Faster Growing Type Needed CHICAGO America's two- billion dollar poultry industry was challenged today by 14 of its naitonal leaders to produce a fast growing, better meat-type chicken chick-en to help retain the market Doultrymen have won during the current meat shortage. ' ' A 4?-state contest to develop a broad-breasted chicken comparable com-parable to the popular broad-breasted broad-breasted turkey was announced by the group, according to D. D. Slade, secretary, International Baby Chick Association, Lexington, Lexing-ton, Ky., who was elected chairman chair-man of the supervisory commit tee to formulate plans for the contest. : Consisting of representatives of all major poultry associations and key poultrymen of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, the committee has been asked by A & P Food Stores to draw up specifications spec-ifications for an ideal meat-type bird and to supervise distribution of $8,000 in awards which the company has posted "to encour age the poultry industry to place increased' emphasis on the production pro-duction of a better meat chicken to insure greater profits for poultrymen poul-trymen and finer poultry for consumers' con-sumers' dinner tables." " "The program is designed to crystallize thinking among all poultry breeders, from the large hatcheryman to the owner of a small backyard flock, on a chick en with an abundance or carv ings," Slade said. "This is really a challenge to rural America's poultry producers. Up to this time poultry meat has been mainly a by-product of egg pro duction. The committee will set standards for a bird which will have a greater percentage of meat to bony structure, larger proportion of white to dark meat and a broader breast well-filled with flesh in other words, chicken that will offer a greater degree of flavor and tenderness and contain more meat than ever before produced. The bird must mature rapidly and the breeding stock must maintain high egg production." ; From 'the poultryman's angle; Slade added,' a broad-breasted chicken should mean more economical econ-omical giowth more meat per pound of feed eaten, which has a lot .to do with profits.: ; Th& contest will last three years and will bring a $5,000 cash prize to the poultryman breeding the best bird. Annual progress awards will total $3,000. Besides Mr. Slade, committee members include Homer Huntington, Hunt-ington, manager, Poultry and Egg National Board; E. B. Hea-ton, Hea-ton, secretary, Institute of American Amer-ican Poultry Industries, and Ralston Hannas, editor, America Ameri-ca nPoultry Journal, all in Chicago; Chi-cago; Prof. George Jaap; Poultry Science Association, Stillwater, Okal., Clyde C. Edmonds, president, presi-dent, Associated Poultry and Egg Industries, Salt Lake City; Harry Har-ry Atkins, secretary, American Poutlry Association, Davenport, la.; Hobart Creighton, President, U. S. Record of Performance Federation, Fed-eration, Warsaw, Ind.; O. A. Hanke, editor, Poultry Tribune, Mt. Morris, 111.; Jacob Buxbaum, National Poultry, Butter ar.d Egg Association, Boston, Mass.; Leon Todd, secretary, National Poultry Producers Federation, Trenton, N. J.; and Dr. T. C. Byerly, H. L. Gurney, councilman in charge of roads. The roads previously oiled oil-ed will be repaired also, Mr. Gurney stated. . Each week we are . receiving word from several army and navy postoffices that papers are not deliverable because of insufficient insuffic-ient address. Usually the serviceman service-man had been transferred to another an-other base. All we can do is stop the paper. Parents whose boys are receiving the paper should send in word immediately of any change of address or report re-port all boys who have been dis charged. Changing of addresses is a big weekly headache but we don't mind that if there is a chance of the boy getting the paper after it is addressed and mailed. However, How-ever, there is little reason in sending out 20 or 25 papers every week that will never reach their proper destination. Tune To The Summer Electric Hour Sundays On KSL At 2:30 P. M.
