FEBRUARY 22, Steel Officials Give Lions Optimistic View AMERICAN FORK, UTAII A very optomistic picture for nresent and future operation of ho Geneva Steel plant was given Thursday by Mr. P. D. Nielsen ond Mr. Paul Sullivan when they discussed plant operation at the regular Lions meeting. The plant has now reached a 90 per cent production capacity, has 4,000 persons on the payroll and is operating all three blast furnaces, has operated all nine open hearth furnaces at once and is generally operating all units of the plant at near capacity ca-pacity points, it was stated. Upwards of 5000 tons of coal are being used daily to produce 2 300 tons of coke and some 3,000 tons of steel is rolling off the lines each day besides some pig iron that is shipped to the Pacific Pa-cific coast for conversion into steel and other products there. The bulk of steel production from the plant is going into steel ship plate and shell casings now, it was declared. The Geneva plant is not yet fully maned and adjustment of state taxes, freight rates and other minor problems face this new Utah industry if it is to become highly competitive with other U. S. plants, it was said. Optomism for postwar operation was expressed by the speakers. Usually there are certain departures which are not quite as popular as others. Experience, in normal times, has proven to most transportation companies that early morning schedules carry fewer passengers. (People don't like to get up before sunrise.)
