Show f f THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, Citizens Urged to Participate In Xmas Lighting Contest The Lehl Lions club, who are roonsoring another holiday lighting ntest this year, are urging local citizens to make preparations now to enter the contest. The contest last year, sponsored by the Lions, proved to be very successful. suc-cessful. The response was fine and ' the beautiful holiday decorations created a wonderful Yuletide atmosphere at-mosphere and it is hoped that more citizens will join in this year. The sponsors wish it definitely understood that they do not expect expensive displays. Simple inexpensive inex-pensive decorations are usually most effective. The rules of the contest are as follows: 1. Display must be In place by December 23rd and remain up during the Holiday season. 2. Displays must be lighted from 7 p. m. to 11 p. m. 3. It must be built- around a Christmas theme. t The contestant may work out his method of conveying his message. 5. The display must be fully observable ob-servable from the street. 6. Three cash prizes will be awarded: $3.00 for the first place winner; $2.00 for second place winner; and $1.00 for third place winner. 7. Applications for entering the contest must be made to the Contest Committee prior to December De-cember 23. 8. The judges decisions will be final. Judges of the contest will be Junius A. Banks, Margaret S. Potter Pot-ter and A. B. Anderson. Light Up For Santa Claus Your City Power Plant is doing its part to encourage Santa Claus this year by sponsoring Christmas outdoor lighting for every home. Free power and three expensive prizes are the inducements being offered by the City Power department depart-ment to citizens who cooperate with them in lighting the homes of Lehi for Santa and the Christmas Christ-mas holidays. " Lights artistically arranged will be the basis of the awarding of the three prizes. The only rules to qualify are that lights must be on Christmas eve at 6 o'clock and remain re-main on until 8 o'clock Christmas morning and from 6 until 10 o'clock each night until January 1, 1941. The power plant will furnish each home 500 watts of power, sufficient to light 35 globes of 15-watts or 20 globes of 25-watts each. The city electrician will call and make connections con-nections ahead of the meter. City merchants have on hand a PPly of globes, wire and sockets. May this YeS1.5 be a happy and cheery one, and may the New Later Prosperity and shower health and happi- The Mayor and the City CounciL 1940 Mayor and City Council Draw Up Tentative Budget At a council meeting held Tuesday Tues-day evening the Mayor and City Council drew up the tentative budget bud-get for 1941 and a public hearing on this Ibudget will be held Saturday Satur-day evening, December 28, in the Memorial building. The budget is based on a 22 mill levy. The assessed valuation is less this year than last year. For this year it is $920,244.00 and for 1939 it was $939,744.00. The 22 mills has been divided as follows: Contingent fund, 5 mills; Health and Recreation, .50 mill; Public Safety, 4 mills; Streets and Alleys, 2 mills; Library, 1 mill; Memorial Me-morial Building, 2 mills; Bonded Indebtedness, 4.50 mills; Public Light, 3 mills. ' Set aside for the Metropolitan Water District is .25 mill, however, this goes direct to the Metropolitan Water District and not to the city. Eldon Peterson Transferred To Texas Mission Eldon Peterson, son of Mrs. Inez Peterson of this city, who has been laboring in the Tahitian mission for the past several months, has been transferred to the Texas mission, mis-sion, relatives report. The missionaries were taken from these island missions because of present war conditions and transferred trans-ferred to the United Statest - The train taking Elder Peterson to Texas stopped for 35 minutes in Salt Lake City last Friday evening. Those at the station to greet him were: Mrs. Inez Peterson and daughter, Beth, Ralph Goates, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Peterson and son, Keith; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil H. Pe terson and daughter, Ruth, and son, Vere, Miss Pearl Peterson, Marion Mar-ion Thomas and Mr. and Mrs. Ern est Peterson. They stated that he is looking well and happy and was very thrilled with his missionary labors in Ta- hitia and was sorry to leave there, however, we believe that he will enjoy his work in Texas just as much. Charges Dismissed Against Local Young Man Charges of involuntary manslaughter man-slaughter were dismissed Friday by Provo City Judge Leroy Tuckett against Donald C. Fotheringham, 22, Lehi truck driver. Fotheringham was charged with the death of David K. Roylance, 7 -month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernal Roylance of Springville, In a truck accident on August 29, 1940 in Spanish Fork canyon. Judge Tuckett, who took the case under advisement following a preliminary pre-liminary hearing last week, said he found insufficient evidence to show that Fotheringham was violating the law at the time of the collision Song of the Turtle' The "song of the turtle" is a bird song that of a turtle dove. Allred First Ward Will Present Pageant On Christmas In keeping with a custom estab lished a few years ago, the Lehi First ward will again present a pageant on Christmas- morning at 6 a. m. For the past number of years an early morning pageant has been presented in this ward and every year it has met with great success, the ward chapel being packed for the presentation. This year the pageant is entitled, "The Holy Grail." It is being presented pre-sented by the M. I. A. and directed by Miss Theda Henke and Miss Delia Carson. Special Christmas music and decorations are being used throughout through-out the performance and every detail de-tail is being worked out to make it a real Christmas presentation, one that will give everyone attending the real spirit of Christmas and help them to enjoy Christmas day more abundantly this year than ever before. The banquet will be served at 8 o'clock during which a program will be presented. The program will feature native Hawaiian entertainers in song and dance numbers. Group singing of Christmas songs will be led by Lioness L. B. Brown. A real live Santa will be there with a pleasant surprise for every Lioness and lady guest Each Lion, too, will receive a gift. The initiation initia-tion and induction of members who have recently Joined the club will be an Important feature. Toasts will be given by lady Lionesses Lion-esses and responses by the Lions. Adult Men's Recreation Periods Will Begin Dec. 30 Recreational activities for all men of this community will begin on the evening of December 30, from 7 until 9 p. m. in the high school gymnasium, according to announcements announce-ments made this week by Recreation Recrea-tion Workers of this city. After the first of the year regu lar Recreation periods will be held in the gymnasium every Wednesday Wednes-day evening, beginning with January Janu-ary 8, and continuing through the winter months. This recreation program Is free of charge and is open to every male adult in the community, who is out of school. It will be necessary for those who Join in these activ ities to have gym shoes, however, this is the only requirement. Anyone may register by contact ing Arthur Sabey or Mayor Dean Prior. Slippery Road Causes Auto Accident Slippery roads and frosty weather were believed to have been the cause of the automobile crash Wed nesday morning about 9:30 in the Fourth ward, when the automobile driven by Mrs. Robert Comer col llded with that of Glenn Russon on the corner near the Millard Rob erts home. The two cars crashed together on the corner, the fenders and headlights head-lights being jammed on both cars. The occupants escaped Injury. Glenn Russon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Russon and riding rid-ing with him were his sister, Maur-ine, Maur-ine, and his brother, Kenneth. Riding Rid-ing with Mrs. Comer were her husband, hus-band, her son, LeGrande Comer, and Francis Lee. City Marshal Arley Clark investigated investi-gated the accident. Lehi Wins First Basketball Game In the first pre -season game of basketball season, the Lehl Pioneers edged out the Bulldogs of North Cache, 10 to 9, here Friday night It Is stated that the shots at the hoop were as frequent as cloudbursts cloud-bursts in Alaska. Korth Cache made only two goals from the field and five of 10 free throws. The locals mada four out of 10 charity tosses. Christmas Festival and Pageant Will Be Presented By High School Friday Night Play School Presents Xmas Play Today The little children of the W P A Play School are presenting a charming charm-ing Christmas play, entitled 'Christmas 'Christ-mas In An Orphanage" today (Thursday) at 2 p. m. in the Fifth ward amusement hall. Special costumes have been made for the children and every member mem-ber of the school will appear in the entertainment, which la under the direction of the teachers, Miss Ada Phillips and Mrs. Fern Johnson. John-son. All parents of the children and others are Invited to attend. Following the play a Christmas party will be held and the children chil-dren will exchange small gifts. The Mothers organization, are in charge of the party, the committee including in-cluding Mrs. Hershel Manning, Mrs. Tom Peck and Mrs. Roger Price. Lions Club Ship Celery As Good Will Token The forty-five Lions clubs of Utah, the Lehi club Included, shipped out to the 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal Zone, Porta Rico and eight foreign countries, 150 pack ages of Utah celery, each package containing three Jumbo stocks. In the past this practice has brought Utah much favorable con tact. On Saturday, December 7. Depu- uty District Governor Joseph S Robison and District Governor A C. Hatch were guest speakers at the Charter night anniversary ob servance of the Castle Dale Lions club. En route to and from Castle Dale they visited club officers in Mt. Pleasant, Moroni and Ephralm On Thursday, December 13. they were guests at the Zone E. Ladles night party at Roosevelt. Clubs of Wasatch county and the Uintah basin are all thriving and Intro duclng a number of useful proj ects into their communities. A large number of local club members are planning to attend the Zone F Christmas Jamboree at Provo Friday night, to be held at the Provo Country Club House. This is usually one of the outstanding outstand-ing entertainments of the winter season. Lehl's Sweetheart Valentine Ball has been scheduled for Thursday, reoruary 13, Valentine eve. club omcers announce. It will be an orriclal party for Zone F. Wheat is grown in tha Alps to an altitude of from 8,400 to 3,600 feet and up to 4.500 feet in tha Apennines. Demonstration fields in tha Tuscan Apennines bava produced pro-duced yields varying from 30 to 83 quintals per acre, the plateaux of the lower slopes producing as much as 40 quintals per acre. By utilizing utiliz-ing an adequate amount of fertilizer it is anticipated that much higher yields may be obtained. The production, being presented by the combined music and speech departments of the high school, is expected to be a very lovely affair. Studrts have been rehearsing for the past several weeks, under the direction of Mr. Frank Shaw, music instructor, and Miss Vera Conder, speech instructor, and the people of the community are sure, to en- Joy the festival, which will include Christmas music and carols, special lighting and stage settings, pageantry pageant-ry and tableau. It will be presented in two parts, the first part to Include the students stu-dents of the Junior high schooL The second part will be the story of the Nativity with choral reading by students of the Senior high school. One hundred and eighty students of the Junior high school will ap pear in one chorus and a mixd chorus of seventy-five voices will appear for the first time this year.
