In a Minnesota case, a house was sold to the first bidder for $675 after the second and only other bidder had offered $680. The auctioneer refused to consider such a trifling increase. So the second bidder sued but lost his case on the ground that no contract exists until the offer to purchase is accepted by the auctioneer. Midway Islands Discovery The Midway islands were discovered discov-ered on July 5, 1859, by Capt N. C Brooks of the American-owned Hawaiian Ha-waiian bark, Gambier, who took possession pos-session in the name of the United States. Captain Reynolds, in the U. S. S. Lackawanna, took possession posses-sion formally on August 28, 1867. Australia's Wool Production With Australia's wool production increased from 143,300 bales 11 years ago to 238,000 bales now, the country remains its own third best customer. Only France and Great Britain purchased more Australian wool last year than did- Australia. U. S. Leads In Chemistry Prof. E. J. Crane of Ohio State university, editor of Chemical Abstracts, Ab-stracts, has reported that the United Unit-ed States leads the world in chemistry. chemis-try. Germany has dropped to third place and Great Britain to second. Professor Crane's report is based on an analysis of 65,000 chemical discoveries. Most Favored Nation Under the amended 1930 Tariff act every nation is entitled to any reduction re-duction in duty given to any other nation, unless the President proclaims pro-claims that a certain country is discriminating dis-criminating against our commerce. Such a proclamation was made by the President in regard to Germany. Germany is the only country to whom the most favored nation tariff policy is denied.
