Sarah his sis ter, fearing that she might be forced from him and himself put to death. The prince being captivated by the beauty of Sarah took her into his harem, with the resign of making her his wife. In a dream, however, the Lord threatened him with death, unless he immediately restored her to her husband Ablmelech pleaded his ignorance of the relation between be-tween Sarah and Abraham, and said to the Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?. Said he not to me, she is my sister, and she herself her-self said, he is my brother. But the Lord told the king to restore Sarah to Abraham, and if he refused re-fused to do so, he and his whole household should surely perish- Ablmelech Abl-melech arose early the next day, and called all his servants, and told them all, and they became frightened Ablmelech then called Abraham, tnd said to him, what is this thou has done to us? Wherein have I offend ed you, that you should bring this calamity upon me and my kingdom? What was your purpose in doing this thine? Abraham answered: Be cause I thought, surely the fear of the Lord is not In this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. And yet, she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became be-came my wife. And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, X said unto her, the favor I shall ask of you, is, that wherever we shall come, say of me, he is my brother. Ablmelech then took sheep, and oxen, and men servants, and women servants and gave them to Abraham, Abra-ham, and restored to him Sarah his wife, and said to him: Behold, my land is before you, dwell in it where- ever it pleaseth you. And to Sarah he said: Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver. Augustine says: Abraham did not lie by calling Sarah his sister, as indeed she was. Being exposed at the same time to two dangers, one of losing his life, the other of having hav-ing bis wife taken away from him, and not being able to avoid either by acknowledging her as his wife, but t'"H"g it at least probable that he should escape death, by ack nowledging her for his sister; of the two evils he chose what seemed to him the least.
