Show Pleasant Grove Review New Utah - Thursday, June 24, 2004 - Page 8 Lindon recommits to UTOPIA, Qwest promises to compete Theatre By Harlow Clark London's City Council approved UTOPIA'S amended amend-ed agreement June 15, reaffirming reaf-firming the city's commitment commit-ment to remain as a pledging member, to commit a certain amount of sales tax revenue each year for bond payments if the system doesn't produce enough revenue to cover payments. pay-ments. London's involvement stems from three years' inability to get service from Qwest and other DSL providers. Mark Soltes, Qwest's Director for Governmental Affairs came to the meeting from Denver to read a letter offering to expand and expedite expe-dite Qwest DSL service in Lindon, and above the Mur-dock Mur-dock Canal, making it available avail-able to 90 percent of the city within a year if the council voted no on UTOPIA Soltes said Qwest has many competitors and if the take-rate for services offered over UTOPIA is lower than forecast the project will fail. Lindon adopts $15M budget Lindon's City Council adopted the budget for 2004-2005 June 15. The $15,321,437 budget adopted the county's certified tax rate increase from .001874 to .002095. This raises the property tax revenues forecast in the budget from $791,000 to $935,884. The city will appropriate that excess to the fund balance, bal-ance, which helps the city save up for capital projects. Lindon will also accept Southfield, . and Spring Ditch Irrigation Co. water shares on a conversion rate determined by JUB Engineering. He said if the council voted yes "Qwest will compete with UTOPIA and drive the take-rate take-rate down." Robert Lundgren, a 31-year 31-year Qwest employee confirmed con-firmed that Qwest is putting in DSL above the Murdock Canal, and said UTOPIA is a gamble. "Residents shouldn't be required to go out on a limb to build a utility," he said, adding that the additional three years on the bond because of cities that have pulled out is "three more years of bondage." The pledge on UTOPIA'S bond will come from sales tax, but London has one source of sales tax coming in that will far exceed what UTOPIA requires. Ellertson emphasized that member cities are - not , trapped in a commitment to build UTOPIA. "There are exit strategies involved." The next step is try the system in 3,000 or 4,000 homes within the commited municipalites. performances of Oscar Wilde's "Importance of Being Earnest," which no one took seriously. Omary canceled her final play, "Grabnet," mid-run because the small crowds were no longer keeping pace' with the large bills. The theater has now been empty for nearly six weeks, giving Omary time to reflect. She has felt the full gamut of emotions, but chooses to be glad for her experience and the lessons she has learned. "It was a very costly education," edu-cation," she said. As for an encore attempt at dinner theater, Omary says she's keeping her options open. "I'd love to do dinner theater the-ater again, but I'd do it differently. dif-ferently. We did it well, but we didn't do it right." Having paid more attention atten-tion to movie advertisements advertise-ments lately, Omary would market the theater on billboards, bill-boards, buses and radio ads to attract audiences. Omary is grateful for the support she has received from the community, for Custom Masonry Specializing in cinder block buildings, fences, retaining walls, garages, etc. Also, brick mail boxes plus repairs.
