"They're quite young. Sara's just a sophomore and Jessica a ninth-grader." As great as Pleasant Grove's display of defense was, American Fork's resistance resist-ance to Viking attacks was not something to be overlooked over-looked either. American Fork's keeper didn't let Vikings Cambri Burgon, Leah Stoker or Diana Strong get clear shots at the goal mouth. The duel between the two netminders was so evenly matched that neither of their teams could score. Bran said, "We had more effort in the second half than in the first. Everybody was communicating better. We had better organization. Still, we didn't have anyone side, team scores were Timpanogos Tim-panogos 30, Pleasant Grove 49 and Orem 56. In the girls' race, Tawny Parks took first, Kaylee McEwan 2nd, Camillia Frenzel 6th, Sarah Goodrich 12th, and Jessica Kernan 15th. Sarah Hiatt, Jenae McKay and Dianna Frenzel also competed. For the boys' race, Ryan Wheelwright took third, Brian Armstrong 12th, Photo by Dean Von Memmott - slips to second place rate the top three teams in the cumulative standings, with Orem standing at 783, followed by Pleasant Grove and Lone Peak tied at 787 apiece. "Gladstan was set up to play as long as it has ever been distance-wise, and the Vikings had a hard time making putts or the team score would have been several sev-eral strokes lower," said coach John Kurtz. "Achieving a four-stroke difference in the top five golfers shows how good the team depth is, but we need to have at least two or three of the players shoot in the 70s consistently," the coach who could finish it. We don't have a true finisher. The girls still do their best, though." Despite the contest ending end-ing in a stalemate, a relieved Bran said, "We're out of the L column now." The league opener against Lone Peak also included a great defensive battle between two schools. In the first half, the Knight goalie's swiftness was perplexing per-plexing for the Vikings. No matter how many times Strong and Kelsi Illi would bring the ball deep into Lone Peak territory, the Vikings were rebuffed. The second half opened with the Knights in firm control of the field and putting put-ting a lot of pressure on Swenson as they kept the ball close to the Viking penalty box. Backed by Hob-son Hob-son and Elsey, the Pleasant Grove goalie refused to break under the stress. Midway through the period, the Vikings finally captured the momentum. Soon after the steal, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove's Whitney Fox kicked in two goals within a few minutes of each other. The Knights soon answered with a goal and kept unrelenting pressure on the net for the remainder of the contest, but they failed to score again. The Vikings travel to Orem this afternoon, then visit Timpanogos on Tuesday. Tues-day. Varsity kickoff time is o.ou p. in. tri-meet 3:30 p.m. Trevor Walker 15th, and Tommy Taylor 17th. Michael Peterson, Logan Gurr, Verdon Walker, Ryan Hoffmann, Nils Kolste, Teige Carson and Marcus Jones represented Pleasant Grove as well. Viking coach John Kernan Ker-nan said, "We've accomplished accom-plished a lot more this early than we did at this time last year. Camillia Frenzel cut down her time by three minutes. Our performance at pre-region was the best in a long time. We're progressing pro-gressing ahead of schedule." The UCI has a unique format. No team scores are officially kept, but runners compete against opponents their age. In the 9th-10th grade girls' race, Ashley Gleason took eighth, while teammates team-mates Goodrich, Kernan and Dianna Frenzel also ran. For the boys' 9th-10th grade race, Trevor Walker took 37th and was followed in by teammates Gurr, Kolste Kol-ste and Jones. In the junior-senior girls' race, Parks took third, Amber Gleason fourth and Kaylee McEwan 31st. Camillia Frenzel, Hiatt and Jenae McKay competed for the Vikings as well. Running in the junior-senior junior-senior boys' race were Armstrong, Arm-strong, Wheelwright, Verdon Ver-don Walker, Taylor, Troy Bailey and Hoffmann. said.
