Show Pleasant Grove Review New Utah - Thursday, July 17, 2003 - Page 6 PO IT'1'': to" RTS PG 17Us hoping to make the playoffs By Dean Von MEMMon Sports Correspondent After having done so well for their UABA League season sea-son this summer, the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove 17-and-under division , players have lost three straight games and are now battling to. survive to make it to the league playoffs, scheduled for later this month. On the Warrior diamond that night, Always-tough Taylorsville outlasted Pleasant Grove 5-4 at their field July 12. On two outs in the top of the first, Warrior pitcher Todd Morlock walked Kyle Beecher. A Josh Smith singled sin-gled moved Beecher into scoring position. After a Chris King walk had loaded the bases, a fly out kept them from scoring. Though pitcher Josh Smith gave up singles to Brenton Oralian and Tony Gray in the bottom of the first, the Vikings held the Warriors scoreless. Pleasant Grove was not so fortunate the next inning. After Morlock opened it with a strikeout, he gave up a double to Tyson Larsen, but the Warriors continued keeping Pleasant Grove off the scoreboard until the fifth. Taylorsville had little reason to feel overjoyed about that achievement, since the Warriors kept leaving runners on base every inning. That problem played to Pleasant Grove's advantage in the fifth. In the top of it, the Vikings loaded the bases on no outs. With one out, Jordan Smith singled in two runs. Jake Hoyt knocked in another two Vikings, putting Pleasant Grove ahead 4-2. The Warriors War-riors quickly turned a double dou-ble play to shut down the rally. In the bottom of the inning, Taylorsville tied the game at 4-4 with a two-out double. In the sixth, reliever Jordan Smith held the Warriors War-riors scoreless that inning. In the seventh, King's left-field double gave the Vikings hope, but he was stranded at third. During the bottom of the seventh, Nigbur singled in Jason Gonzales for the tie-breaking run. Earlier in the week, the Vikings lost 10-13 at home to the American Fork Cavemen Cave-men July 7. Viking Coach Ryan Hall said, "It was an ugly game for us. We made 13 errors. American Flork made five runs in the sixth inning. "We came back in the seventh. On one out that inning, we had a runner on first and another on second, but American Fork hit us with a double play." Hall said the Vikings didn't did-n't hit well when the Lehi Pioneers pulled past them 7-4 July 8. The Vikings are scheduled sched-uled to finish their regular season this week. I '"il V ... ..
