We still have a lot of youngsters without big meet experience, experi-ence, but this will change as we go along. We will be competitive com-petitive in the' region. We always did well where we had quality, but we lacked the depth to score in the lower places. "Our region continues to be the toughest in the state, but now we have the opportunity oppor-tunity to place in the top three," he said. "I'm glad the kids know this, and I'm confident con-fident they'll step up." Mountain View still has the depth and the quality to earn the top ranking, with a few members who rank among the top 10 nationally in their events. "Orem has some good competitors; they have less quality than Mountain View, but as much depth," Kernan said. He envisions a fight with Timpanogos and Lone Peak for that third spot. "Lone Peak has some quality but not the depth; Timpanogos has more depth, but not as much quality," the coach explained. "Strategy will certainly come into play this year. We'll base our decisions on what will work best for us at the state meet." Boys coach Leo Biggs does not have as much to work with, but said that the Vikings will be solid in the hurdles, middle distances and field events. "A lot of our runners are young," he said. "We're still working on the sprints and looking for some talent to develop for the longer distances." He added, "Ben Buckner looks good in the 300-meter hurdles. Junior Brian Armstrong Arm-strong will lead us in the 400 and 800. Sophomore Beau Bond is one of the region's better shot putters." put-ters." The team has suffered some key injuries early, but Sean Welch is expected back soon from his knee surgery. Biggs thinks the boys side of the region competition competi-tion is more open, though "Mountain View is always strong," he said. The Vikings will have a chance to test themselves in the next two big meets. They will spend Saturday at the UHSTCA Invitational Invitation-al at Mountain View, then will compete Wednesday and Thursday at the Mt. Timpanogos Invitational at Timpview High School.
