Great effort by 16Us ends in forfeit By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent A rule violation caused the Pleasant Grove Vikings to forfeit a Utah Baseball Academy League game against the visiting Brighton Bengals' 16 year-olds year-olds division team Julv 11. The reason for the forfeit was that Pleasant Grove had forgotten to put the name of Steve Carroll on a roster submitted to the umpire just before the game. When Carroll got sent into action in the fifth, a Brighton coach pointed out the violation, and the umpire called the game. Pleasant Grove was leading by 8-7 at that time. The game's sad ending spoiled a brilliant effort put forth by the Vikings during the night. Pitcher Jordan Smith held the Bengals scoreless in the first two innings. This enabled the Vikings to build up a nice lead. In the bottom of the first, Smith doubled in two runs, then came home on a Danny Robinson double. In the bottom of the fourth, Petersen came home on a Josh Smith sacrifice fly, and Jordan Smith doubled dou-bled in Alex Iorg. During the top of the fifth, two straight sacrifice flies brought in two runs, tying the game at 7-7. Walked by pitcher Lahti in the bottom of the fifth, Larsen slide into home to break the deadlock right after Petersen had doubled into left. The tie-breaking run was the last good moment for the Vikings. The Vikings host Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove on Saturday at 11 a.m. to conclude the regular reg-ular season. The West Jordan Jaguars defeated the Vikings 13-3. Pleasant Grove rebounded Saturday by winning 4-3 over the Lone Peak Knights in the opening round of the state tournament, played at Cottonwood High. In the first two innings of the earlier contest, Jaguar pitcher Danny Sanovich didn't let Pleasant Grove make any hits, even though he did send leadoff batter Jake Hoyt to first after hitting hit-ting him at the start of the game. In the bottom of the first, Wilson Waite singled into left field, and Paul Pedler doubled him in, then came home on a Ryan Wilson double. The next inning, West Jordan loaded the bases on one out. Third baseman Travis Stephansen attempted attempt-ed to use the situation to Pleasant Grove's advantage by tagging Cory Heslop. However, before the third baseman could throw to home, Mike Meifu scored a run. The Vikings waged a big attack on the Jaguars' 3-0 lead in the third. On two outs, Hoyt doubled in Riley Young.
