Division of W ildl.fc Kcsources bioloL'i.-ts have confirmed that New Zealand mudnails have been discovered in a portion of the upper fJreen River 27 miles below Flaming (Jorja Darn. This stretch of river is one of the bet and mo.-t popular trout fmhintf waters in the western L'niU-d States. Mudsnails are small (about one-eighth inch in diameter), they cling to boots, waders and boats, and they pass through digestive tracts of fish and predators that eat fish. Division o f Wildlife Resources biologists will post signs along the upper (Ireen River, informing anglers about the mud-snails mud-snails and providing tips on how they can help prevent their spread. These snails can reach densities den-sities of half a million snails per meter. They pmviJe no fi value for fi-h and they compete with fl.-h and aquatic plants and animals fur fd and space. ' To help prevent spreading spread-ing the snail further, anglers are encouraged to do the following: 1. Clean fishing gear ' waders, boots, nets, etc.), boats and trailers before leaving a fishing or boating site. Remove any vegetation, vegeta-tion, mud or foreign materi- that mav be attached. Drain water from your boat's bilge before you pull away from the site. 2. Clean and dry your gear thoroughly before using it again. Start by washing with a strong soap solution and then rinsing the equipment with tap water that drains onto the ground. Then allow your equipment to dry in the hot sun for several hours. Doing so should kill any mud snails that don't wash off. This is especially important a :V1: .- s. Snails become im! ed-led in the felt and are d.:Vicu': to remove. 3. Mud-nails can be transixirted in the guts of fish, so remove the stomach and digestive tract from any harvested fish at the site where you catch it. Dispose of the material in trash receptacles at the site. If receptacles aren't available, take the entrails home with vou and send them to a sanitary san-itary landfill. Do not flush them down the drain at vour home mudsnails can be transported to sewage facilities, and then on to other bodies of water this way. The same procedures mentioned will also help stop the spread of other diseases, dis-eases, including whirling disease. "Thoroughly cleaning your equipment after fishing fish-ing needs to become a way of life for anglers today, something they do so often that it becomes a habit. It's the best thing anglers can do to prevent spreading diseases dis-eases and aquatic nuisance species, such as these mudsnails, mud-snails, that are affecting Archer Call 756-7669 or 373-5050 to place a classified ad Experience and Commitment Have Made the Difference V KayBryson Utah County Attorney Utah County has an Experienced Advocate in the fight against crime. Archer said that it's unclear how mudsnails got into the upper Green River. New Zealand mudsnails arrived in the western United Unit-ed States in the 19S0s, where they were detected in the Snake River in Idaho and the Madison River in Montana. They later spread to Yellowstone National Park and, in 2001, were detected in the Owens River in California. Personnel at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area recently announced that snails also have been found in the Colorado Col-orado River at Lee's Ferry, just below Lake Powell in Arizona.
