But this game proved that Patch was capable of scoring scor-ing from any spot on the court, as was evident by his two three-point baskets. Balanced scoring marked the first quarter of action as six Vikings put points on the board. Pleasant Grove jumped out to an early 9-3 lead after the Cavemen failed to score during a five minute scoring drought. In the second period Patch paced the Vikings with seven points which was good enough to keep Pleasant Grove slightly ahead at the end of the first half with a 27-23 lead. Historically the Vikings have struggled to regain their first half momentum after the halftime break. That would not be the case against American Fork. i 1 - s 1 1 V'.rV . A three point bucket as well as a nice transition layup pushed the Pleasant Grove lead up to nine at 36-27. To aid Iorg in building an impressive 20-point third quarter, Patch added 10 points of his own. At the end of three quarters quar-ters of play the Vikings held a seemingly comfortable 47 - 37 lead. As was the case last year, American Fork made a fourth quarter rally in an attempt to come from behind for the . second straight season. After pulling within five points midway through the quarter, quar-ter, American Fork could come no closer. Kyle Anderson held the Cavemen at bay with his six points in the final four minutes. min-utes. Seth Iorg finished the night with a season high 11 points while Derrick Turley added to the scoring with 10 points of his own. Friday night against Spanish Fork, the Vikings needed the victory to maintain main-tain a solid second place position heading into this week's key battles with Timpview and Payson. A letdown was not in the plans for this Viking team. Though pesky, the Dons were in for a long night as the Vikings began shooting the three point shot early and often. Derrick Turley hit two treys in the first quarter to go along with a three from Kyle Anderson. Pleasant Grove held an early 21-18 lead after one quarter. In the second period Turley continued the hot shooting with seven points including another three point bucket. Patch also hit the long ball once in the quarter as Pleasant Grove put 16 more points on the scoreboard. Both teams headed to the locker room knotted at 37. The third quarter again proved to be the difference in a close game. Patch opened the second half with nine points to lead all Vikings in the quarter, but it was a Turley three point bucket that swung the momentum back to the Pleasant Grove bench after the Dons had just taken their second lead of the game. With Turley's bucket, the Vikings tied the game. That would be the last time Spanish Fork would hold the lead. Late in the third quarter Kyle Anderson nailed a three point basket of his own to put the Vikings ahead for good. Pleasant Grove took a five point lead into the final quarter and never looked back. Free throws became the difference in the game as the Vikings scored 17 points in the final quarter all from the foul line. Key to the victory vic-tory was the 74 percent conversion con-version rate there. Derrick Turley finished the night with a team high 21 points. Closely following Turley were Patch and Anderson with 19 and 18 points respectively. Colt Sampson also contributed eight points in the paint. Now the key week of the region schedule faces the Vikings. Last night Pleasant Plea-sant Grove played host to Timpview, who at the beginning begin-ning of the week was the only unbeaten team in the region. On Friday night the Lions from Payson will invite Pleasant Grove into the "Den" for a game that will determine which of the two teams will likely battle Provo and Timpview for the top spot in the region race. count - " " ti' : bybeatin - V" I ., g,.n -;- . - x, " -- I Seth Iorg shields the ball from a defender at AF on the lotti Peterson 2nd at Nationals Pleasant Grove junior Bryce Peterson passed two runners in the final 800 meters to finish second in his age group at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships Champion-ships at Rancho San Rafael in Reno, Nev., last month.
