By Kalyn Secretan Newutah! Correspondent The "Jump for Your Heart," jumpathon was held recently at the Grovecrest School. It was sponsored by the American Heart Association and the BEST program at the school under the direction of Lana Rooke. The BEST (Building Esteem in Students Today) has ongoing activities through the year for the students to learn about helping the community. On the brisk sunny day, children chil-dren were seen in a variety of jumprope activities at the back of the school grounds. The kids rotated among seven different stations, they were seen participating in the hula hoop maze, jump high and wide, cone relay, chain run in and jumping the rope to rhymes. Teachers, PTA representatives representa-tives and students were all seen busily turning the rope and cheering for those who were able to jump the longest. Other students were seen running run-ning and jumping in stride. We are delighted to announce that out of the 700 grants proposals in the United States, Central School is one of 50 schools to receive a grant. Our grant is funded for the maximum of $1 0,000 and will allow us to expand the use of our computer lab and space ' center into submarine simulations and study of oceanography. Thanks again to Toyota for their generous financial awards to help schools around the nation increase learning in Science and Technology. We are desperately in need of 7 library books that were lost during the Science Fair research. The list includes: Light and Sound, Projects in Physics, Experiments in Physics, Electrical Gadgets and Gizmos, Simple Experiments a Child Can 1 Do-Marshall Cavendish Science Project Book of Water, Marshall Cavendish Science Project Book of Mechanics, and In The Air. Please look for them in your homes and send them to the library. Many of them are new books. Leticia will be teaching a one hour class to the 5tn grade every day for two weeks. There will also be two assemblies on Friday, April 7. What's New: Just a reminder that the parking lot is closed except for faculty parking and construction workers due to the building of our new cafeteriagym. Parents need to pick up their children on 1 100 North or 300 East (behind the school). We are thrilled to have this project begin and ask for your assistance in helping our children stay safe. Please contact your child's room mom if you are willing to help before and after school with getting children safely to their rides. Central students poce at BYU Science Fair Four students from Central Elementary school received second and third places at the recent BYU Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair. Nearly 250 students from the Alpine, Nebo, Jordan, Provo and Wasatch School , Districts competed in this event. Whitney Andersen and Megan DeMasters, both in sixth grade received third place for their joint project called "Carpet Cleaners." They received a trophy and a $15 check. Scott Bezzant, a student in fifth grade, won a second place award in his category for his project, "Lava Lamp." He received $25 along with a trophy. Brady Thompson also received a second place honor with his project "Ocean Breezes". Thompson is in. the sixth grade. ..( " . .
