Already seasoned by their recent Bad to the Bone Invitational, the Bulldogs were more than ready to take on the green Vikings, who pulled out of their only planned preseason tournament. The Bulldogs allowed Pleasant Grove to make only six serves during the game. In the meantime, Provo posted a 15-0 win in Game 1. The Jesters beat the Montana team twice in exciting fashion to take the title. The first win was secured when Jason Littledike came to bat with his team trailing 5-3 and the bases loaded. Later named tournament MVP, he tripled off the right field fence, scoring all three runners and thus giving the Jesters a 6-5 victory. In the deciding game, Castlewood was holding a precarious pre-carious 10-9 lead in the last inning with one out and runners run-ners on first and second. Shortstop John Lindsley snagged a sharply hit ball and threw to second, where Littledike was able to turn the double play to end the game. Several team members were recognized for their outstanding outstand-ing play during the tournament. tourna-ment. In addition to the MVP, pitcher Steve Black was named outstanding pitcher of the tournament tour-nament with a 5-1 record. Outfielders Jody Osborne and Brandon Bingham were named to the All-World first team, while first baseman Shawn Bezzant, catcher Deon Bezzant and pitcher Russ Chadwick were chosen for the second team. The local team wore down the Utah County squad, but not before they had won games against some great teams from around the country. "We went out there with 'our' team, not an all-star team, and I felt like the chemistry is what helped us win games," said coach Marlin Barnes. "I know the teams we played were state all-star teams put together just to win this tournament, and that's what made our success even more special. "We had a different hero every game, with either a big hit or a great defensive play," Barnes said. "Everybody stepped up." Rick Houghton won the home run crown, earning him a spot on the All-American team along with Dave Ratliff, Darrin Henry and Gene Clements. Mt. Still, the Bulldogs fashioned fash-ioned a 3-0 lead through kills by Melissa Butler and Kate Kafusi. Lauren McCann served up two straight aces that permitted permit-ted Pleasant Grove to rally back. McCann tied the score at four on a Stephanie McFarland kill. The game stayed deadlocked at four as several possession rotations occurred. Finally, Stephanie Overson broke the tie with an ace, and Provo went ahead 7-4. Provo's hold on the momentum proved temporary. The Vikings quickly tied the game at seven. A Kimberly Wilson kill stopped Pleasant Grove from breaking the tie. That didn't discourage the Vikings. Aided by McFarland and Jenny Scoville's hitting, Jamie Kartchner put them ahead 9-8. No sooner did the Vikings' hope for a third game arise when the Bulldogs sneaked back ahead of them. Pleasant Grove made one more strong run at Provo. The Vikings tied the game at 12. A Wilson kill stopped Pleasant Grove cold this time. A Katie Jarman kill won the game for the Bulldogs. Soccer team drops one to Timpview By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove Vikings received a 4-0 defeat on the Timpview Thunderbirds' Provo soccer field Sept. 9. Led by Rachel Hartgrove, Chantal Cowley, and Charlotte Eads, the Vikings made several deep penetrations of the Thunderbirds' territory. However, Timpview goalie Brianna Gordon put up stubborn stub-born resistance to the Pleasant Grove attacks. She picked off several fine shots taken by Leslie McBride and Rachel Powell. Midway through the first half, Timpview went on a wild scoring run. After Viking goalie Lindy Stott had staved off three straight Thunderbird scoring tries, Stephanie Anderson kicked in a goal for Timpview. In the next 10 minutes, the Thunderbirds' lead swelled to 4-0 on goals by Becca Peterson, Meredith Simmons, and Maria Durass. In the second half, sweeper Holly Pledger offered Stott much assistance in keeping the Thunderbirds from making more goals. The sweeper frustrated frus-trated the extremely physical Thunderbirds with her fre quent expulsions of the ball from the Viking penalty box. ' Pledger's efforts gave the Vikings some hope of catching up with Timpview. However, Gordon kept picking off important impor-tant Pleasant Grove shots. The Thunderbirds' best chance for scoring a second-half goal arose when Pledger fouled Liz Jackson inside the Viking penalty box. However, Stott managed to intercept Jackson's penalty kick seconds before the game's final whistle. The Vikings host Spanish Fork tomorrow and visit Lone Peak on Tuesday.
