Show Thursday, December 18, 2008 Page 5 Investing yourself is an act of love SINGIN' IN THE RAIN n I Chris Jones m ast week we discussed investing your time, T?J and this week is investing, invest-ing, part two of three investing invest-ing yourself. To introduce intro-duce the topic, let me quote : for you a sign I saw at a local company. It said "Use empathy in every call." Perhaps this is effective ef-fective for them, but my immediate reaction was that empathy is not a sales tactic. You can't "use empathy." What you can do is care. And if you care, you'll invest yourself your-self however you are needed. How is this distinguished from investing your time? Like so: I and my neighbor have roughly similar-size lawns. His, however, is always a picture postcard, whereas mine is a mug shot. I spend almost the same amount of time out there as he does. But he puts himself into his lawn, and I frankly don't care about mine. Grass is a plant I just don't care about, while my neighbor's investment invest-ment of himself into his lawn makes it the envy of the neighborhood. neigh-borhood. If you come 'round to the back of the house, however, you will see where my heart is, horticulturally speaking, because my vegetable garden is larger than our first house. I love veggies, and I baby them and weed them and I can't get enough of them. They get more than my time; they get me. Some examples: the Lehi Rotary Club yesterday gave away a car. That's the second one they've given to a needy family, and it won't be the last. They also give away thousands of dictionaries every year to local lo-cal third-graders, sub for Santa at Christmas and next month they're throwing the Twelfth Night Charity Ball to raise money for needy families in Lehi and all over the world. The members of that club are not sitting around bored; they are some of the busiest people in the world. But they know that to change their community for the better will require more than time and money, it will require the souls of those that care. They invest themselves in Lehi, and Lehi is better for it. Utah Home Makeover Heart-to-Home Foundation is another of my favorite groups. These wonderful people, headed head-ed by Tiffany Berg and Greg Adamson, give hundreds of hours and countless dollars to rebuild the homes of those who need it. This year, they rebuilt a house in Taylorsville from the ground up and did several other smaller remodel projects. Money and time, sure, but it was much more than that. Ask the Groves family. Ask your family. You can spend time at home, you can spend money like Lehman Brothers, but unless you invest yourself you will not have a happy family. No investment returns more than a few minutes min-utes of yourself spent with a child. Your spouse requires an even more complete investment. invest-ment. A successful marriage requires total commitment and full investment from each partner. When you hug your spouse, are you still working out the bills for the month? Are you really there when you're there? Investing yourself is a 100 percent commitment to do what you know needs to be done, holding nothing back. See, investing yourself is not just doing a project. It's not "using empathy." It's caring. It's love. Not the love you fall in, but the love you choose. Real love, in other words. And that's what investing yourself is, when you distill it it's love. This time of year, especially, find something to love, and love it. Invest yourself your-self in its growth and well being. You may find that next week's topic, investing your money, doesn't matter so much to you anymore. But come back and read it anyway. Joyeux Noel.
