In college, her major was painting, but she has recently shifted to a point at which ceramics is becoming her favorite. The American Fork High School teacher has recently had two ceramic pieces piec-es accepted to a juried show at the Springville Museum of Art: the Utah County K-12 Educators Educa-tors Exhibition, which began Dec. 6 and runs through Feb. 1. Nelson has been teaching at AFHS for 19 years. She has taught ceramics, foundations of art, drawing and painting. Fellow art teacher Kathy Coletti said she was well respected re-spected by the students. "She has a lot of students who just love her," Coletti said. "We have taught together for many years and our collaboration collabora-tion is going very well." Nelson was born and raised in Iowa and started college at Iowa Western Community College, Col-lege, then transferred to Peru State University in Nebraska. "They had a nice art program, pro-gram, but I only attended one semester," she said. Her parents moved to Idaho, and it was cheaper to attend Boise State, so she went there and finished a bachelor's degree in 1989. She started working in a clothing store while she completed her portfolio and resume to apply for a teaching position. "I started here at AFHS in the fall of 1990," she said. Nelson told about her lifelong life-long dream of being an art teacher. "I always wanted to be an art teacher," she said. I wanted to be able to make money doing art. I wanted a steady AMERICAN FORK HOSPITAL WELCOMES JESSICA HADDY, MSW, MSN, CNM, TO THE COMMUNITY '.' "'' caregiver. One of her favorite teachers teach-ers who inspired her to go into the field was Mrs. Almquist in Iowa. "I really appreciated that she took an interest in making mak-ing me a better artist and making me do more complex things than what I had been doing," Nelson said. Being an art teacher has been fulfilling, but there has been one drawback, she said: "I thought you would have more time to do you own artwork. It is not that way so much." Now that she is an experienced experi-enced teacher and has plans prepared, things are a little different. "Life has gotten settled down enough that I can do it now," she said. "I do this to relax at home. You are not worrying about what lesson you are teaching tomorrow. I have gotten it down now after so many years." When she first started at AFHS, there wasn't a ceramics program. "It has taken a while to get that program built up," she said. "Ceramics has really started for me doing my own art work in the past three years." She said the key was to practice, practice, practice. "It is not as easy as it looks," she said. The same goes for teaching art classes. "The challenge is having patience pa-tience and finding enough time to keep them inspired, looking for enough things that you can teach them," she said. "I am always al-ways changing the curriculum to get it to a higher level" Prouttit fare for After joining Mt. "We ' have really great kids here at AFHS. We have lots of talent, tal-ent, with kids who have been raised really well. Behavior-wise Behavior-wise we don't have a lot of problems." There is no particular type of student who excels in art, she said "It is surprising sometimes," she said. "It will usually be a student that doesn't really think they are artistic." If she's not teaching, preparing prepar-ing lessons, or doing her own art projects, she may often be found reading. "I love to read, mostly suspense, sus-pense, thriller, mysteries," she said. Some of her favorite authors are James Patterson and Patricia CornwelL "I also love truTV. It is like courtroom television stuff." Of course, her major passion is her art. The two pieces she had accepted to the art show were a slab piece with carving carv-ing and a wheel-thrown bowl with carving. Both are untitled. Instead of making a piece and adding trim tc it, she carves away the background, which is a new technique for her. "When I was in college I didn't like subtractive ceramics," ceram-ics," she said. "Now it is kind of my signature thing. Shading the color on it is like applying 5,000 different layers of glaze." She said she was pleased to have her pieces accepted in the show. "With the quality of pottery pot-tery teachers in our district and Provo district, I thought I wouldn't get something in," she said. "I was thrilled. It is a juried show and not everybody got accepted. That really validated vali-dated me that I am headed in the right direction." 24 HOURS i mi t RADIO RADIO The Key to life is Jesus NOW with Full Streaming Audio on the Web HnP:WWW.KEYY.COM FAK1LY & RELATIONSHIPS Focus on the Family Dr. James Dotal M-F 12 Noon & 5:00 p.m. Family Life Today Of.
