Show f MH I Page 12 AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN Thursday, November 13, 2008 NEWS AND IDEAS FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS AFJHS comedy replaces play Barbara Christiansen NORTH COUNTY STAFF Improv is coming to American Ameri-can Fork Junior High School. The students in the drama department are doing a show of improvisational comedy instead in-stead of a standard drama for its fall production. It will be Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the school, 1120 N. 20 West, American Fork. "Usually they do a fall play," said drama teacher Gayle Hansen. Han-sen. "I was also working with the kids on their Shakespeare competition and we were too busy to do a full production, but we wanted to do something." She and principal Shane Farnsworth discussed the issue and came up with the idea of doing an improv comedy show. "It is smaller than a two-hour play," Hansen said. The show's auditions were open to not only drama students, stu-dents, but to all students at the school. Hansen paid tribute to the students who were chosen. "They are amazing," she said. "I am very impressed with the students that have been cast for the show. These kids are great using audience participation." In improv, the show changes every time it is performed. "You have a cast or players," Hansen said. "They do sketches and get audience participation. They will ask the audience to give them a place and a story line. The audience members are the ones that pick the scenes. You make it up as you go along. The kids are great at it." One reason they may do well is that they have been coached by the parent of one of the students. stu-dents. Taylor Bishop's father, Joel, is a professional actor. "He came in and worked with these kids," Hansen said. "One rehearsal was focused on the whole creative process. The kids demonstrated what they could do and we kept what worked." Students also painted the stage and sets and came up caveman Josh Stewart o I was in the grocery S store the other day when this guy comes around the corner having this huge argument with himself. Seriously. Seri-ously. There was yelling, hand waving, his face was all red and puffy. It was truly scary. What could be wrong with him? Was he schizo? Split personality? Or just generally insane? I backed up as far as I could against the cold cereal packages to let him pass. And that's when I saw it- a two and a half inch phone on the top of his ear. The guy wasn't crazy, he was having a phone conversation. The assistant directors are designing tickets and fliers. Some art students designed a logo for the T-shirts and posters post-ers to publicize the evening's entertainment. "Now I am giving tips as they rehearse," she said. "It is always different. I am a facilitator." Hansen said one thing did remain a constant in the performances. perfor-mances. "I can guarantee people there will be a candy throw," she said. "There is a lot of creativity. creativ-ity. Every show will be different. differ-ent. It is like the students and the town coming together." The students have had some specific guidelines. None of the content is to be suggestive or have off-color language. "This is very G-rated," Hansen Han-sen said. "People can bring little kids." Students say the biggest challenge was the nature of the show, and that they hope people enjoy it. "I hope that the audience sees on aisle 7. Is there no safe place? This is the question I had to ask myself as I stood in line to check out my gallon of milk andtwinkies. All around me I could hear the clicking of txt messaging, the lady next to me held up the line while she talked about her hair, and the bagger bag-ger was pulling out his phone between bags. It made me think. Well, not really. What really got me thinking was that date I'd had a few Fridays ago. The girl was possibly gorgeous, fun, outgoing, and whatever else but I'll never know. I never even learned her name. She was pretty busy on her phone. And, since text messaging mes-saging requires keeping your head at an inclined level, I also pretty much can't remember her face. What a shock when she called later to ask why I hadn't asked her out again. I told her she had a really cool phone (which she did) and we L I 61 213 BARBARA CHRISTIANSENNorth County Comedy" at American Fork a bunch of people working together to-gether and playing off of each other," Brayden McCleskey said. "I hope the audience sees something they can relate to in a comedic way. "The biggest challenge has been trying to come up with something really quickly," Austin Aus-tin Watts said. "Sometimes the first thing that comes to your head doesn't work. You have to be quick on your feet." "You just make it up on stage," said TJ Bishop. "You have got to come," he said about potential audience members. mem-bers. "It is awesome." Sabrina Savage said she au ditioned because it sounded like fun. Another student, Nneka Dean, said she's been involved in acting for years. "I have been acting since I was in the first grade," she said. "I start in my first play in elementary school. It was an awesome experience and I have loved drama ever since." Ninth-grader Josh Wirtz said the best part of the improv was being with the students. "Probably being with the cast is the funnest," he said. "I am just kind of getting out and being be-ing myself. You don't have to . be impressed by anything. Suzie Pilkington said the cast members have to work together. "You have to rely on each other," she said. "You can't go individually and try and upstage up-stage everybody else." talked about her phone for a while. Weird. Anyway, I put it to you, is it too late for us to learn cell phone etiquette? I mean it. Really. Here's the thing: What if there was this universal time slot where we could have all come up with some basic rules, like we did when we were kids playing hide and seek. You know, no peeking, hide only in the house, etc. Except the rules would be a few basics like turn off your phone on a date. No screaming on the phone at the grocery store, Keep it down. Just the basics. But what if the game has already started and now it's a free for all and it's too late. Ahh well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. My ear phone from e-bay should be here by Friday. Wonder if I should wear it on my date for Saturday? Satur-day? It's green and would go perfect with a shirt I have. Text me if you have an opinion. I oca n you you II notice,..
