With just five games to decide those three critical Region 4 berths, the football teams can't afford to overlook anyone. The Knights and Vikings meet in Highland this week in a contest with potential ramifications for the region championship. Meanwhile, the other four teams will all be battling for wins to keep their own playoff hopes alive. , This is decision week for girls soccer as the regular season wraps up on Tuesday. Right now, the Pioneers still control their own destiny with a one-game lead over the Knights and the Timberwolves, Beky Beaton NORTH COUNTY American Fork's own Adri-enne Adri-enne Schneider is learing how to make a difference for the soccer team at Utah Valley University. The junior midfielder mid-fielder is already credited with two game-winning goals in the young season. On Sept. 6, Schneider scored in the 96th minute to push the Wolverines past Texas State 2-1 in overtime. Schneider took a Jennifer Lohner corner kick with 4:55 remaining in the first extra period and found the right corner cor-ner of the goal to move UVU's record to 3-0, the best start in school history. Then, on Sept. 13 in Cedar City, Schneider scored her second sec-ond game-winning goal of the season as Utah Valley earned a come-from-behind 3-2 victory at Southern Utah. Schneider, who helped the Wolverines (4-0-1) remain undefeated un-defeated to that point, scored in the 58th minute on a Katey Turner assist when she fired a shot into the high corner from about 23 yards out. "This was a good test for us. It's the first time we've trailed at the half, so the girls had to figure it out and come back to win," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "This team feels like it can win every time it steps on the field. Even when we were down, the girls still felt like they could win. I continue to be amazed by the mental composure we have." Anderson attributes some of that composure to Schneider. "She's a very even-keeled, able personality," he said. "That's what she brings to the midfield, stability and confidence. confi-dence. She's a calming force for the whole team. Those three teams will be the leagues representatives in the playoffs, but it's possible that the seedings will be decided by a coin flip. The volleyball teams take a breather this weekend for some tournament action, but league play resumes Tuesday as they finish out the first round. Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove are clearly a step ahead of the rest, but Lehi is playing very tough and will continue to progress prog-ress as the season goes on. The other three teams are still searching search-ing for consistency and trying to get young players on the same page. Oct. 2 GIRLS SOCCER I Lehi at Timpanogos (4 p.m.): This game will most likely determine deter-mine the outcome of the region title race. The Pioneers (7-1-0, 12-1-1) can earn the championship outright with a win here, but the Timberwolves (6-2-0, 10-3-0) can force a tie for the lead if they can find a way to defeat Lehi at home. ; I Pleasant Grove at Lone Peak (4 p.m.): The Vikings (260, 2-10-2) are out of the running for a playoff berth but are still working very hard. They very nearly upset the Pioneers on Tuesday, so the Knights (6-20, &50) need to stay focused to avoid the upset here. Friday, Oct. 3 FOOTBALL I Pleasant Grove at Lone Peak (7 p.m.): This game takes on even greater import following the vi.v-- American Fork cross country team wins third meet in a row Dean Von Memmott SPORTS CORRESPONDENT The American Fork boys cross country team won the varsity division at the Nebo Invitational at Spanish Fork on Friday. The feat marked a third straight time that the Cavemen had won a cross country invitational invi-tational this fall. In the varsity boys race, Ryan Bradshaw took fourth, Robby Lee fifth, Austin West seventh, Derek Day 14th, and Mac Morrison 15th for the score of 45, edging previously-undefeated previously-undefeated Timpview at 51. Clayton Young came in 17th and Jeff Nelson was 22nd to round out the squad. American Fork boys coach Timo Mostert said, "We had four guys on varsity who are now really learning how to race, not just run at a meet. They are still learning. Now, though, they're showing what they've learned. Our guys are Cavemen's unexpected loss to Spanish Fork. The Vikings ( 1-0, 5-1) are ranked fourth in the state polls right now and are considered consid-ered the favorite for the region title, but if the Knights (1-0, 4-2) can control their run-oriented offense and put some points on the board, this could be a very interesting night. I American Fork at Lehi (7 p.m.): The Cavemen (0-1, 3-3) stumbled out of the gate last week and can't afford another mis-step. The Pioneers (0-1, 2-3) took a beating at Lone Peak but were able to move the ball at times against a very good defense, so they've got to think they have a shot if they can just hang on to the ball. "They have a great push. Each of them cut 20 seconds off the times they posted at last year's Nebo Invitational. "Our boys ran superbly today," the coach continued. "Our No. 4 through 7 men are all first -year runners. Mac and Clayton are freshmen, while Derek and Austin are sophomores. sopho-mores. Ryan is our only senior. This bodes well for Region and State. We hope to catch up to Alta, who beat us by 25 at the Wasatch Invititational." "This is the last time Timpview and AF will compete against each other this season, since Timpview Is 4A, while AF is 5A," Mostert said. "Although "Al-though they are competitive on the grass, they are friends otherwise. This summer, they had a few activities together, and each December they make the trip to the Footlocker West Regionals together." what happened on Thursday, the Pioneers can't afford a letdown let-down here. I Timpanogos at Pleasant Grove (4 p.m.): The Vikings gave the Pioneers all they could handle last week, so the Timberwolves Timber-wolves will need to pay attention atten-tion to avoid an upset that would jeopardize their playoff seeding. I American Fork at Lone Peak (4 p.m.): The Cavemen were the only team to defeat the Knights last season and fell just short of beating them the first time they played this year. Since they won't be going to the tournament, this is their playoff game and they'd love to close out the season with a victory over their rivals. The Knights will want to win to preserve pre-serve the best possible seeding. VOLLEYBALL t Timpanogos at Lehi (6:30 p.m.): The Pioneers can solidify their hold on third place with a victory here. .y! American Fork head coach Bruno Hunziker said, "Our No. 1 runner was sick today, so she came across the finish line as our No. 4 runner. That changed the complexion for us today. This meet was a great tune-up for our girls. Their next meet will be the region championships at P. G. on Oct. 11.
