Show NORTH COUNTY NEWSPAPERS Page 11 Celebrations Enlisting as a young man Editor's note: This is the first in a series about Lavell Richins, a one-time resident of Utah Valley who now makes his home in Wallsburg. Richins's living room is as much a World War 11 museum as a living Space, tie spent his Navy service largely on the battleship USS New Mexico a fact most evident in his home. Many WW-11 veterans spend their retirement years (and often their years before retirement) renewing friendships with men with whom they served (unit reunions re-unions are common, though attendance at WW- reunions is waning one must be at least 80 years old to have done active service in that conflict); many collect service memorabilia; many now avidly consult the information and photographs so amply available on Web sites. We could easily digress into the nature of male bonding, which explains the memorabilia and reunion phenomena, rather let's move into Lavell's story. I could see nothing but fear in my mother's eyes (until I became a father, I didn't know what that fear was). My mother knew that we two boys were going to join the service. My older brother Max became a crew chief on a P-51 Mustang in Germany. I wanted to go into the Navy, though I have no idea why. I used to watch the newsreels of the updates on the war, and seeing the big ships I guess just captivated me. I attended a special summer school in 1943 and got enough credits to earn my qigh school diploma. The day before I turned 18, my dad signed for me so I could join the Navy. My mother's feelings didn't concern me too much at the time, but my joining must have devastated her. When I arrived at Farragut, Idaho, 1 thought it was the end of the world, out there in a complete wilderness, right next to Canada, on Lake Pend Oreille French for "earring", where we did our rowing. I could never understand why the Navy wanted us to row. I'd never seen a boat like that on any of the ships. If a ship went down, we would only have nets to crawl down onto Military Joshua Hill Air Force Airman Joshua B. Hill has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, train-ing, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, r JL GET 1 yard ruyaracusony Ecftal or lessor vahi8 dbctxir)d - . M OFF UVk ; life rafts. Still, we pulled and feathered those boats all over the lake. Our hair was shaved off; we walked around nude for five hours while doctors examined us and gave us shots; we took mental tests, to see if we were capable of following orders, I guess. We later did a lot of marching on the "grinder," as we called it. We had only wooden rifles, which looked like the old Enfield rifles and weighed about the same. The whole idea was discipline, and you did everything by the numbers. In the Navy, the floor becomes be-comes a deck. A wall becomes a bulkhead. The overhead is the top. The stairs are ladders. The food was good, even later when we were in the forward areas on our battleship. battle-ship. When we had to supply other ships, we might become short of food. I think it was on Guam where we had the weevily bread. The weevils were in the flour, but weevils won't hurt you. For the first six months, I tried to pick the little black specks out, though I later joked in a letter to my parents that after a while, if you saw the weevil running, you caught them and put them back into the bread. At Farragut, we were field training exercises, and special spe-cial training in human relations. Hill earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Gary and Dee-na Dee-na Hill of Lehi. The airman is a 2000 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School. You didn't have to do much wrong maybe the wrong step while marching, or a right face instead of a left face. But you sure remembered remem-bered afterwards what you'd done. Some of the men tried to run away, but they'd be found. There was no place to go on the top of the world, only pines and mountains around you. But I loved the Navy. I loved the discipline it builds something inside your body as you get a feel for it. You showed respect to higher up officers by saluting them. It all intrigued me, and I loved every minute of it. Next week: Richins is shipped out with a thousand sailors to an OGU (outgoing unit) in Oakland, where he boards his first ship. Some veterans may wish, on their own, to tape or digital record their memories of military service. These will be transcribed and archived.
