Show Thursday May 222008 NORTH COUNTY NEWSPAPERS Page 13 taste Emily Marlowe NORTH COUNTY STAFF It is the season to dust off your barbecue, fill up the propane pro-pane tank or buy a new bag of charcoal. However you do it, it's time to fire up the grill. My husband chooses to be the master "griller" in our home. I always know that if my husband is grilling the meat, that I should buy extra. His idea of seeing if the meat is done or not.'is not by using a temperature gage, but by cutting into the food every time he turns it and "testing it by mouth" to see if it is done or not. I let him have this privilege, because I can see that jt makes him feel "manly" and important. impor-tant. I have to give him the satisfaction that he can cook. Even though we have completely com-pletely different ideas on what cooking is. My husband's idea of cooking cook-ing is throwing any kind of meat on the grill and having perfectly placed char marks on the food when it is finished. But I can kill two birds with one stone by letting him grill the dinner, while boosting his self-confidence that he can cook. So you've got a grill, what should you cook? There are tons of great barbecue recipes out there. 1 have found that you can put anything on the grill and end up with a masterpiece. mas-terpiece. But let's cut to the chase and simply say turn the grill on, turn up the heat and grill away! Try tossing your favorite veggies in a bit of olive oil and placing seasoning on them. Wrap them tightly in two layers lay-ers of tin foil, and spray the foil on the outside with a bit of cooking spray. Place on your BBQ grill and cook until soft. Turning half way through the cooking process. You also should try placing potatoes that have been cut up into 12-inch cubes into a bowl of melted butter. Toss with cornflake corn-flake crumbs and the bbq rub recipe. Then place them in two layers of tin foil, tightly sealed and again spray the outside of the foil with cooking spray and place on the grill. I want to thank Sherry from Highland for sharing the barbecue rub recipe with us. It is amazing on chicken, beef and veggies. Sherry says, "My husband uses the grill and cooks on it more than any of our other family members. He believes no one can do it as well as hecan. The only way I can get my two cents in, is by placing the meat rub on the meat before it leaves the kitchen...." K- Sherry; I will definitely keep this recipe in the front of my recipe box! Sherry did not name the recipe, so I will simply name it "Sherry's BBQ Rub." I joined the Army Reserve in Cedar City, with the idea that I could stay in college till I graduated. I was automotive in the Reserve, Re-serve, but all of a sudden after Pearl Harbor, when I reported back to my automotive class, there was a Pratt and Whitney aircraft engine on the desk. We were told, "As of now, you're an aircraft mechanic." Early in 1943, we were all told, "All leaves are cancelled. Reservists, report to your units." I was just short of completing complet-ing my two years of college. I was given a month's warning, warn-ing, so LaDawn and I married in the St. George Temple. She said she'd rather we marry in the temple than for her to follow me somewhere else and get married. We had two weeks together before I left for the Air Force at the end of May. Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City hadn't been expecting us. There were no uniforms for us, and the Army couldn't give us anything to do. We got up in the morning, rolled up our bed clothing in a nice little pack, went to inspection, then sat around on the floor all day. It was very boring. Finally Fort Douglas got things squared around and got us some uniforms. Then we went out and cut grass Utah County's PREMIER local sports coverage www.heraldextra.com I i to Str.atFif.ld www.stwtlieldhomes com Editor's note: This is the first in a series about Joseph Stott. Most of these columns feature a veteran from the north end of Utah Valley, with our bayonets. We also dug holes six by six by six. The sergeant would come out, throw his cigarette butt in the a hole, then say, "Fill the hole up." I was at Fort Douglas for about two weeks.. At boot camp at Camp Cal-lan, Cal-lan, Calif., I was put in the cavalry the Army still had horses. But after a couple of weeks, the horses were taken away from us and we were given scout cars and halftracks. half-tracks. We were now called "dismounted cavalry." My training was in anti-aircraft guns, but I wanted to be a mechanic. I even goofed up a couple of times on the guns, so I was told, "Get back to work driving the jeep." I became the driver for whoever needed to be driven anywhere. LaDawn came to La Jolla after I finished boot camp and found a room to stay in, a front porch that had been divided into three rooms, with just a one-inch plywood partition parti-tion between them. She had a single cot, a wardrobe, a chair, and a table. She had to go to the other end of the house to the shower and use the rest-room. rest-room. I was able to come and stay over weekends. I passed the tests to qualify for OCS (officer candidate school) but there was never a vacancy for me. I spent another an-other six weeks at Fort Bliss training on 90mm anti-aircraft. LaDawn found a room in a hotel. The hotel had cockroaches, cock-roaches, which I'd never seen before and they were big. jiff, I - Yolanda Moser Charles Wixom KELLER WHUAM5 NEWTownhomes SAVE up 0 ay jmu- mb Mr 1996 East Cedar Trails Wav Eagle Mountain (City Center) Cheryl: 801.380.8900 Shamala: 801.318.7129 www.TrailhcadTownhomcs.coni low E & Argon j j Urtf5tJl Qualifies for Utility j j yvilGhl YpY2z Rebates I xjQ, uJ x I'll nTuftlO'v I M No Payment No Interest .Until August 2008, Some Restrictions Apply Expires 053108 LaDawn would leave a shoe at the door when we'd go out. When we came back, we'd unlock the door very quietly, open it, turn on the light and grab the shoe. LaDawn would run and jump into the middle of the bed, and I'd start killing cockroaches though there were still plenty of them left. After training there, we were put on a train and highballed high-balled to the East Coast, where 9,000 of us were put on the USS Wakefield and went unescorted une-scorted to Europe. The third day out, we heard Axis Sally announce, "The USS Wakefield Wake-field has been torpedoed in the Atlantic. All aboard have been lost." So we knew the Germans Ger-mans were out looking for us. On the.wharf in England, we were lined up and told, "The following servicemen will take one step forward when your name is called." I was one of those men, and all 10 of us were either from Utah or Idaho. After we were marched off a little ways, we asked the sergeant, ser-geant, "Where are we going?" He replied, "I can't tell you where you're going, but I'll trade you stripes." Next week: Why the Utah-Idaho Utah-Idaho boys?
