Show AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN Page 3 VOICES FROM THE COMMUNITY Thursday, May 8, 2008 No Lehi logo change Upon reading last week's article entitled, "Lehi Logo, Slogan to Get Update," our family became very concerned. con-cerned. Lehi has always been a wonderful place to live. It was founded by pioneers. The posterity of those pioneers still live here today because we love our Lehi. Many of those who have moved here in the last 10-15 years have been drawn to the small-town feel of the city. They wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities. Although Lehi has changed a great deal in size, you can still get that small-town country feeling in many parts of the city. This feeling is what Lehi is known for. Lehi is also known for its rodeo. It is one of the best in the state. It draws people from all over. Many families have spent many hours at the rodeo grounds eating those famous hamburgers, and watching the clowns, bull riders, queens, and those same bucking broncos bron-cos that now are seen as a "bad image" to some. We, as a family, have been very impressed with those who have chosen Lehi in recent re-cent years, to be their home. We welcome anyone who wants to move here and enjoy our beautiful city with us, fiABCQ. Windows For V fcfckHMWlh fMiMStt HS1HBI 1EMBI nlZJ SI Glass Product Every Need! I . "?' There will be free food, gifts and lots of fun as we say "Thank You" for making the expansion of our American Fork office possible. We're experienced tremendous growth over these past years, all of which can be attributed to our great customers and to the hard work of our employees. So to all of you and to this great community of which we are a part - Thanks! 6n i , trlh I f - but we don't feel that the city should be "updated" by those who don't understand it's history. his-tory. And we feel that those who represent our city should be very careful when considering consider-ing any changes to be made. Yes, progression is inevitable, but the history and founders of our city is what made it the great city it is today. Their efforts ef-forts should not be swept under un-der the rug just because they don't look "modern" enough to some people. If a new logo is needed, we suggest that the logo be made to include those things that are the foundation and fiber of Lehi pioneers and, yes, bucking broncos. It's OK to bring in something new, if you don't forget the old. As far as our family is concerned, we are the Lehi Pioneers, we are proud to be the Lehi Pioneers, and we always will be. I The Paul Peterson Family Future generation in good hands From time to time each of us has an experience that begs to be shared. A "feel good story" that you simply must tell others about. On May first, Councilman Johnny Rev ill and I were asked to participate in a field trip involving the Snow Springs Elementary third grade. We were expected to Friday, May 9, 2008 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Food - Gifts - Fun Utah County's Small Business Bank (c; 1, 1551 ir IB A il & m is help the students understand the responsibilities of the local government officials and the city administration. That was the assignment. However, I walked away from the experience with an unanticipated comfort and excitement about the future of our young citizens. Having a third grader under un-der my own roof, Lwas not sure how the presentation would be received and was afraid the information would be perceived as nothing short of "boring!" Councilman Revill and I had three sessions each to deliver our message. We had discussed beforehand ways to possibly challenge the children and decided a mock council meeting would be appropriate. ap-propriate. The children were excited to learn the duties of every positioa Everyone wanted to participate and in each session ses-sion a Mayor, five Council members and a City Recorder were chosen. The remaining remain-ing students were told that they would be expected to construct and deliver their own arguments, based on their own opinions before this Mayor and Council. It was fun.'There was a lot of joking and laughing. That "fun" however was about to take a change in a more serious seri-ous direction and the children ... responded appropriately. I represented to them in this mock meeting that I i i I mi nwnnnmes in em - i m Ml 1 1 $184'000 M HW would play the role of the city administrator and that they had to decide how their summer sum-mer budget was to be spent. I presented to them issues and amounts that would be easily understood. I started with a budget of $10,000 and then noted two recreational issues that have received a lot of requests from the citizens; the need for a pool slide costing $5,000 and the requests for a skateboard park at $7,000. Of course chants came from the students for one or the other, but one of the mayors noted immediately, "Well, it looks like we have a problem." It looked like a fun debate until I informed the council that there was one other item they had to consider. That was the need to repair potholes that would require an additional addi-tional $4,000. In each session, it was at this point that I became impressed. im-pressed. The students quickly realized that there was not enough money. As I called for the public comment, almost every student wanting to speak argued in favor of repairing re-pairing the potholes, citing the dangerous conditions and the damage to their parents' vehicles. ve-hicles. I asked for arguments specifically supporting the skate park or the pool slide and in almost every case the student would say that they wanted the slide or the park but also saw the need to spend the money on needed repairs I -'-Illlll III mpWIll? jJL jiLi f - . - 1 i . it I . In the end, each of the mayors may-ors conducted the meetings with excellence, the council members voiced their concerns con-cerns appropriately and each recorder, well, kept notes of each speaker and their opinion. opin-ion. I walked away excited that third graders, when a decision de-cision is difficult will respond so responsibly and rationally. In a way I am embarrassed that this surprised me. But I have great comfort concerning concern-ing our future leaders. I Mark I.
