Fork resident retires from hospital I Ann Shields NORTH COUNTY STAFF When Stanley (Stan) Street began working at the old American Fork Hospital on Third North (now Heritage Care Center), he was one of three members of the maintenance mainte-nance crew, including supervisor supervi-sor Ira Taylor. They took care of all of the mechanical and engineering needs. He moved to the new facility facil-ity when the hospital moved in about 1981 and as he said goodbye good-bye on Oct. 19, after 36 years, he said he leaves behind many friends he's met over the years. Leaving as manager of the Engineering Department, Depart-ment, he said the number of employees in the department has increased to six. Nearly everything is taken care of electronically and controlled by computer. Instead of everybody every-body doing everything, each employee is specialized in one area. Previously everything was done manually. One change, he said, is, at the old facility, for example, if the power went off for some reason, only the Emergency Room and Operating Rooms were powered by generators. genera-tors. Now generators switch on over the whole building in seven seconds, and controls prevent surges when electricity electric-ity returns. "There were 83 beds in the old hospital. This only increased in-creased by 22 beds to 105, but the size of the hospital more than doubled and it is designed much better, much more efficient," effi-cient," Street said. Street graduated from Trade Tech, soon to be, Utah Valley University, in Refrigeration, going to work for a Salt Lake Company that installed refrigeration refrig-eration units in grocery stores and other commercial businesses. busi-nesses. "That meant a lot of travel," and when then hospital administrator Wayne Mc-Tague Mc-Tague offered him the job at the hospital he jumped at it. "Cathy and I had a small family and I wanted to be home more," he said. He chuckled when he recalled re-called a "scary moment" at the old hospital. In 1972 there was . a bomb scare one evening. "My job was to go with two firemen to check out the basement. base-ment.
