SCERA Youth Artists New this year is a visual art program taught by professional profes-sional artist Heather Wilson-iAincan Wilson-iAincan of Art Box Kids. Art Core I classes will teach art techniques using a variety of mediums, and students will create their own masterpieces which will be exhibited in a gallery gal-lery show open to the public. Ages (i ll meet Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m., ages 12-18 meet Mondays from 4-5 p.m., and classes for home school groups ages 6 and older are available I uesdays from 1 1 a.m. -noon or 1-2 p.m. l ull semester classes will begin the week of Sept. 10 and continue through Nov. .'50. Tuition is $120 and includes all materials. Additional semester art classes a daytime Mom and Me course Tuesdays at 10-10:45 a.m. for parents and children from 4-0 p.m.; Cartooning for ages 12-18 on Mondays from 5-) p.m. and for ages (i-1 1 on Wednesdays from 5-i p.m. A series of one night workshops for youth and adults will offer classes in junk art, spook -a-li-cious masks, !f-portraits and funky Santas. SCERA Youth Speech Society Also new is the SCERA Youth Speech Society for students stu-dents 13 to 15. The program is designed to give students the conf idence needed to speak about subjects important to them. Participants will have public speaking opportunities and be part of SCERA's new speech competition. Among the skills taught will be questioning ques-tioning techniques, research, opinion and support, preparation prepara-tion and audience awareness. The instructor is Kristie Jolley, a state-certified language arts and reading instructor. The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. beginning Sept. 10 and continuing con-tinuing through Nov. 19. Fall semester tuition is $120. SCERA Children's Choir Three children's choirs, under the direction of Nina Cooley Freeman, will help children receive professional music education and performance perfor-mance opportunities and discover dis-cover some of the world's best music. The first group, SCERA Sprouts, offers two divisions: children age 4-5 on Mondays from 44:45 p.m. and age 6-7 6-7 on Mondays from 5-5:45 p.m. Tuition is $!)0semester. SCERAvision Youth Media Lab Students grade 6-12 learn multimedia production in this 1 1-week course Sept. 7 to Dec. 7 on Fridays from 4-5:30 p.m. Participants produce SCERA's own broadcast news programs and learn skills including research, re-search, writing, interviewing, video photography, sound recording, editing, teamwork and leadership. Students become be-come the reporters, anchors and technicians and work with broadcast equipment and experienced expe-rienced instructor Quin Swallow. Swal-low. Tuition is $90. SCERA Youth Theatre SCERA Youth Theatre has eight different groups to serve children from kindergarten age through 12 grade, and they will receive class instruction and many performing opportunities, oppor-tunities, including a Christmas concert, spring musical revue and their own live theater production. The year begins the week of September 10 and goes through mid-May of 2008. Program director Laurel Barham oversees more than a dozen experienced instructors. Alpha Actors, for kindergarten kindergar-ten through 1st grade, learns creative drama on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. with $25 per month tuition. There is also a $10 production fee per semester. se-mester. They will perform an in-class presentation for their parents. Showteam, designed for grades 24, meets Tuesdays from 4-6 p.m. The class has a musical theater focus with singing, dancing and acting and will perform Disney's "Aristocats." Tuition is $35 month plus a $35 production fee per semester. The Dramatics is a new class for grades 24 that will meet Wednesday afternoons from 4-6 p.m. to learn musical theater skills including singing, sing-ing, dancing and acting. They will perform "The Princess and the Pea." Tuition is $35month with a $35 production fee per semester. Young Actor's Workshop for grades 4 through 8 meets Fridays from 4-6 p.m., and the acting class will focus on scenes, monologues, stage combat, auditioning and Shakespeare. They will perform per-form a Christmas play and a Shakespeare show. Tuition is $30month with a $.'35 production produc-tion fee per semester. Stage Crazy, for grades 5 through 8, will meet Wednesdays Wednes-days from 4-6 p.m. and learn singing, dancing and acting skills with a musical theater focus. They will perform the story of Pinnochio called "No Strings Attached." Tuition is $35month with a $35 production produc-tion fee per semester. Another new group this year is Headliners, which teaches students grades 7-10 musical theater skills such as singing, dancing and acting. They meet on Fridays from 4-6 p.m. and will perform "Once Upon A Mattress." Tuition is $35month with a $35 production produc-tion fee per semester. SCERA Youth Theatre also has two advanced musical musi-cal theater and performance teams that hold auditions each summer: General Ruckus, for grades 7 through 10, and Acting Act-ing Up!, for grades 10-12. America gives Labor Day Concert The English-American folk rock band America will make a stop at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre in Orem for a concert on Labor Day Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. with original members mem-bers Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell. General admission tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children (age 3-1 1), seniors (age 65 and older) and students. stu-dents. Seating is festival-style on a grassy hill, and patrons may bring a blanket or rent a chair for $1. Reserved seating areas range from $20-$30 for adults and $15-$25 for children, students and seniors.
