It s good for her busi ness, since she is the owner of Nick's Book Exchange. She opened her toors in March of 2004 with around 300 books; the inventory has increased to 6,500 and she is looking at expanding to a new room in her home. She started her business looking look-ing for a way to supplement her retirement income with something some-thing she could do at home. Now, the location is home to new and used books, including historical romance, classics, literature, junior classics, self help, mysteries, fantasyscience fantasysci-ence fiction. Western, religious, decorating, craft condeased books and cook books. They come in both hardbacks and paperbacks; pa-perbacks; some are large print editions. Customers may wonder about the business name and ask who "Nick" is. Cannon explained ex-plained her maiden name was Colleen Nicholes and she Is actually actu-ally called "Nick." "I am the little bald-headed man out there on the sign," she said. Cannon was recently reading an entry in her journal from 1986. "I had thought about having a bookstore at that time," she said. She had planned out what she would do and what she would need to bring her dream to a reality. Eighteen years later, it has happened. Her love of books started even earlier than that journal entry, however. "I kjve to read," she said. "I have ever since I was a little girL When I was a little bigger I was begging everybody to read me the funny papers. I learned to read when 1 was real young." "The traffic got too bad in Orem, so I thought 'why not this end of town? " she said. Her customers enjoy several advantages from shopping with her. "Some people take their books to a thrift store, but they don't organize them," she said. Her shelves are categorized according to genre, with each one alphabetized by author. Not only that, but Cannon often is able to tell about the various volumes, plots and characters, making recommendations. "I have read a lot of them," she said. Customers agree with her enough, she has had to expand and has had custom shelves built four times since she opened. Customers may browse and make purchases, but are also offered credits for books they submit for trade. She gets them on the shelves as soon as she can. but often has a backkg, with books in boxes, waiting to be placed.
