Barnes, Jack Barnes and Elwin Barnes. Cathy Allred lour brothers, two wars Joseph I-, and A.alia Barnes's soas were asked lo serve during World War II. Later, the youngest son was ( ailed out during the Korean War. All four veterans live in lx-hi. I here were 10 in their family five sons and three daughters. The oldest brother, I loyd Barnes, was married and starting a family of his own before Americans Ix-gan fighting in W.W.II. Nit all of them were happy about having lo serve. "I was drafted like the rest of us. Kv-eryone Kv-eryone if us didn't want that military service, we were drafted," said Freeman Free-man Harries. 7f He served an LDS mission for two years in Samoa and entered iIm- Army Signal Corps as a private when he was 24 I recman trained at San Luis (JbisX), Gilif , and then his outfit went lo Fort I lood, I exas The military lx-gan activating acti-vating his group, the .'50'irU Signal Battalion, Bat-talion, in )'.M for Korea "It never did build up the battalion to where it was ready to go over," Freeman Free-man said "I lucked out 1 guess " I.. Lynn Barnes, M, entered the Army in !M2 and served out his duly in Alaska. C. Jack Barnes, 79, was drafted but chose the Navy in July M4. "I don't really have much to say, you know I spent all my time stateside," Jack Barnes said. He was an aviation electrician's mate, maintaining the electrical systems of military aircraft. "I met a lot of gixxJ people, a lot of it wasn't so good ... some of them have religious affiliations and others not so much." After he was honorably discharged in August 194fi, he kept in contact and still does with friends he made during his stint in (he service. And then there was Flwin Barnes, 87, to whom his brothers defer when asked about their military experience. "Flwin, he's the one who carried the serious action part. We didn't get any of trial," Jack Barnes said. "If this can teach something to the younger generation, gen-eration, it will lie worth it." I le served in the Kurorwan theater, entering into the Army in March 1941 tx'fore the United States had committed commit-ted anything in W.W.II and he stayed until the war ended. "I don't know if he would want to talk about it, they usually don't," his brother said. Flwin Barnes started in north Africa and from Africa went to Sicily, then to Salerno, Italy and southern France, I le went over with General George S. Patton's 2nd Armored Division and operated tanks for the Army. First, he landed at Casa Blanca in December 1942. "When we got up to Robot, one of the first divisions got nearly wiped out Kasserine Pass," he said. Kasserine Pass was a defining moment for Americans Amer-icans against the Germans in the Tunisian Tu-nisian Dorsal Mountains of North Africa. Af-rica. They suffered heavy losses, 1,000 dead and hundreds taken prisoner. From their mistakes and weaknesses, the Americans quickly reassessed the situation and learned how to fight the enemy. By May 13, 1943, the last of the resistance was defeated and Elwin be came part of the 52nd Transportation Battalion. "They started a truck battalion then, we had trucks and ducks," he said of his amphibian and land transports. He saw a lot he said he'd rather forget and had more than a few near death experiences. In particular, he said he recalled their move on Anzio, Italy, in 1944. "The dead was stacked so high, it was rotting in the sun," he said. " They were shpoting at us, so we couldn't get in to get them and bury them. They stacked them up like cord wood." While many of the dead were Allied soldiers, a lot of the decaying bodies belonged to the Resistance too. "I'm not looking for any glory or anything," he said. "I'm no hero. I did what I was sent to do." His tour ended July 21, 1945, and his military experience, while usually quietly tucked away in his memory, comes to the forefront occasionally at unexpected moments. Like when he saw his outfit cross the Po River in Italy for a Oliver North special program on television. "It brought back a lot of memories, sometimes too much," Elwin Barnes said. "Don't get me wrong, I had it easy compared to thousands of people." North County Newspapers DAILY HERALD PUBLISHING CO. 59 W.
