Game 2 Continued from Page 6 second inning off a Carson Watkins homer that sailed over the left field fence. The two early runs were all Smith needed. After striking out two in the first inning, Smith gave up a run in the second when Steve Parker scored on a base hit by Taylor Mangum. But that would be American Ameri-can Fork's only run of the game, although the Cavemen Cave-men did threaten in the fourth. Smith retired the Cavemen Cave-men in order in the third, but in the fourth, Austin Haws reached on an error, Holmstead walked and Parker Park-er reached on an error to load the bases with one out. But a comebacker to Smith resulted in the force at home for the second out, and Smith then got a fly out to left field to end the threat. American Fork (14-7) faced Highland (15-9) in an elimination game Monday at BYlTs Miller Park (see separate sepa-rate story). He also finished ninth in the Game 3 Continued from Page 6 gle down the right -field line. He advanced to second and Tyson Davis reached first on an error in center field. Parker drove in a run on what was intended to be a sacrifice, but an error left everybody safe again. With Conder at bat, Parker stole second while Davis dug for home and both were successful suc-cessful on poor infield play. With one out and Parker on third after a passed ball, the Rams intentionally walked Hap Holmstead, who was replaced on the bags by Kai Bagley. Bagley stole second before Austin Haws singled sharply up the middle to plate two runs. He stole second while Gentry Bean was up to bat, and Bean drove him in with a double to give American Fork a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish. The Cavemen added a run in the fourth when Davis reached on an error and came in on a Conder sinlge to center. Bean took over pitching duties in the fifth and sixth and held Highland High-land scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth, Josh Jones drew a leadoff walk, then scored on a Spencer Spen-cer stand-up double following a pitching change. Davis then doubled down the left-field line to bring in Spencer, advancing on a Parker sacrifice fly and later coming home himself on a passed ball. Cavemen Dean Von Memmott SPORTS CORRESPONDENT Although the Cavemen didn't make the playoffs this season, American Fork softball coach Shanna Stevens did have some positive things to say about her players performance this spring. "At the beginning of the year, we had made it a goal to focus primarily on winning small victories," Stevens said. "We forgot about the whole war and focused on doing small things like keeping our errors down and getting on base more often. We were able to do that." Some walks and an error helped the Rams to score four more runs before Ingersoll recalled re-called Mangum from left field to finish off the game with two successive outs. The American Fork coach said, "That was such a fun game, especially when it was for bragging rights. Even though Cyprus made it to state and we didn't, that win against them was still a fun (memory)." That game, incidentally, ended in a double play. Stevens said she was extremely ex-tremely pleased to see how much improvement the members mem-bers of her pitching staff showed this year. She pointed out, "Our pitchers pitch-ers were coached this year by Lee Ann Hollaway. I appreciated appreci-ated her work with them. She had them work on their snap, push, and follow-through. "We've got Spanish Fork tomorrow and we'll have to throw well to beat them. They're a great team." "I think we need to come out tomorrow and not make as many errors," Mangum said. "I'm not sure who we're facing, but I've heard he throws a lot of off -speed stuff. We just need to sit back and drive the ball to the right side if we see a lot of off -speed." The two sophomores are Kelsey Brimhall and Marci Kruger. The freshman we'll have back is Lisa Paxman." Stevens said that through the course of the games American Fork played this year, "the girls displayed more confidence in the batter's box. "We also came up with double plays on throws from the outfield. We moved Lindsey Phelps from catch to outfield. She would catch fly balls and throw to third to complete double plays for us." On Saturday, he ' -... t- ' scored American Fork's only run against Pleasant Grove after getting aboard with a double. Monday he hit a triple and scored, drove in one run on an intended sacrifice (he was safe on an error), and later advanced a runner with a sacrifice fly. On Tuesday he tripled and was left stranded, doubled and scored one of the two Caveman runs, and drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh after a full count. He represented the potential winning run but was left stranded. Before the tournament he'd had only 12 hits all year with no triples. HAWS PLAYS THROUGH INJURY - Austin Haws suffered a com pound fracture of his left thumb in Saturday's loss to Pleasant Grove. He continued to play with it heavily taped, moving from second base to center field on defense and hitting from the left side of the plate on offense. He used his speed to good effect in the outfield and even made a little noise at the plate despite the injury. Tennis TENNIS TEAM STACKED FOR NEXT SEASON The Cavemen qualified for the playoffs at every position, and although none of them made it past the first round of the state tournament, the team will be losing only two seniors and looks to continue progressing for this next season. Track PULLEY PACES AMERICAN FORK - Shaylee Pulley was the top scorer for American Fork at last ' ' weekend's state meet, finishing second in the girls' high jump with a solid mark of 5-feet, 2inches. Summerisa Bell made a personal best leap of 15-6.5 in the long jump, and Lindsay Voorheis also had a personal best in that event at 15-2.5. Tyson Davis bunted in the runner from third and moved Spencer to scoring position. Brinkerhoff then walked Parker to set up the tense ending. The Cavemen threatened again in the fifth when American Fork's Gentry Bean singled. Andrus got a strikeout strike-out and Spencer reached base on a fielder's choice. She would give out everything she had, and she always al-ways left it all out on the field." Stevens said replacing Phelps will be impossible, even though Shelby Swapp and Paxman will be seeking to step into the space that will be left by the senior.
