The three papers at the tirrse had bn orrrh;m-d under tlie name Newtah, w hich was made-up made-up by a group of people in California Cali-fornia who had bought the new s-pap-rs. It was an unwieldy name, but workl for business purrxses: to identify the corporate entity. In .97 we add-d two new spa-pers spa-pers and ooavidaUd the new spapers s-papers under a single name. We didnt like New Utah much better bet-ter than Newtah. Iut the publisher pub-lisher packed it, and it grew on us. It grew on our advertisers, too. By publishing five editions of one new spa per, instead five separate sepa-rate new spapers. we became the largest circulation weekly newspaper news-paper in Utah. It helptrd us ounripete for advertising adver-tising wiJi tit- Daily Herald in IntxA-o as w ell as the DesrrtA New s and Salt Iake Tribune, all of w hich w anted the readers and! advertisers in our axea. But when Pulitzer Inc., owners own-ers the Daily Herald, hsugl-.t the papers in 2002, it marked a Readers' Forum President Bush we felt the honor and resp-ct of hi office and felt humbled to play a small part in this inauguration. The students s-tood a little taller, marched with mum precision and played from their hearts as we marched by the viewing stand. It was a moment that will be remc-mVx-nKJ throughout their lives. As we sat nn the Senate huJding the next momir and listened to Sen. Instead of mrript-ting with the Daily Herald for adverUsers, we w ere adding the strength of our circulation to the Herald's overall over-all numben-. It followed quite naturally that the New Utah name would have to go. That's w hy we returned to the traditional names of our new spapers, spa-pers, adopted the Lone Peak I'ress name for our Lone Peak edition and added a new edition for Cedar Valley called the Pony Express It's taken more than a year for that change to be reflected reflect-ed on our storefront sn downtown down-town American Fork, but the new sign is now there. More changes are in the works For one. over the next few w eeks the new s operation of the Oiwj-Oeneva Times will shift from Orera to our American Fork off.ee. and it vrJI become one of our North County Newspapers. Changes are also under way in the ' ay these news-papers are prod :oed and how they look. B A our goal remains the same as always, The old New-Utah New-Utah motto stated it best: 'More local ne w s that any other source." .nd we hpe to keep providing that to the north county coun-ty area for years to come. There was: alway s a group of students gathered to read the notes and cards of support that were put on the board in the band room. They were amazed that people outside of their own families cared so much. The med.a coverage, both newspaper and television was superb Caro'T Merrill, principal princi-pal of AFHS and .Mayor Ted Bar-ratt Bar-ratt accompanied the band to Washington. D.C. 'Sen. Orrin Hatch met with them there. V. her, these students marched down PennsySvania Avenue, they truly knew they were representing much more than thtm.seSves. The band represented our community and our state well. Comments were made by people in the restaurants, the hotel, and by airl:.-es personnel- that reer had they seen such a large group of'kidsbtha so well. The AFHS Marching Band has achieved many past honors, but none wJJ be more nvemorabie than marching past the President Presi-dent of the United States and a word wide t!ev7.sion audience. Thank you.
