Audiologist Dr. Layne Garrett and chiropractor Dr. Nate Miller joined "America Helps," a group of medical professionals and support staff which traveled to Africa. Garrett had been collecting collect-ing hearing aids and took them with him. He set up screening tests and dispensed dis-pensed the aids to those in need. "I personally dispensed over one hundred," he said. "America Helps" began five hears ago and has grown. "It started out just (helping (help-ing with) hearing," said Garrett. "This year there were three audiologists, a chiropractor, a nurse, an OBGYN and support staff. There were 23 total individuals." individ-uals." Along with medical supplies sup-plies like the hearing aids, the group took three tons of educational supplies - notebooks, note-books, backpacks, desks and chairs. There .were other, more personal items, including Halloween candy leftover from their kids, that they wanted their dads to take with them. In the week they were there, they worked long hours, saw a lot of poverty, helped some and left others hoping for help when the Americans come again. And they would repeat the experience. "It was a lot of work, a good time and we hopefully helped some people," said Garrett. "I would do it again." Miller agreed. "It was quite the experience," experi-ence," he said. "It was pretty rewarding. Some said they had had headaches for 15 years. That was the first time they were OK." A typical day began with breakfast at 6 a.m. Wherever Wherev-er they were, people were waiting to be treated. Some were there as they ate. They would finally leave for a village, vil-lage, usually more than two hours away on rough roads. When they arrived, individuals individ-uals would be waiting for them to come. They returned dbout 7 or 8 p.m. to find others waiting for them. "It was hard to say 'no,'" said Miller. "Overall it was great. As a specialist in the spine, I had many opportunities opportu-nities to work on them." "I probably saw 100 people peo-ple a day," he said. The people of Ghana have not had chiropractors in their country yet and are unfamiliar with the symptoms symp-toms and treatments. "They would call it waist pain," said Miller. "Every body complained of headaches and neck pain. It . was pretty easy to understand under-stand since they often carry 30 pounds on their heads all day long." Garrett refurbished hearing aids which had been donated to the cause. They had come from individuals indi-viduals who had replaced them for a newer model, or even were donated by sons of daughters of those who had died and no longer needed them. "A woman came to me and said her son had gone on an LDS mission to Ghana and wore hearing aids," said Garrett. "After he came home he was hit by a car and died. She brought his heading aids in and wanted them to go to Ghana." Some of the audiologists had daughters and sons come along to help. "We had three hearing tests going on at any given moment," said Garrett. "I looked at the results, selected select-ed a hearing aid for them, adjusted it and gave them a year's worth of batteries. Next year we will go back with more batteries." In addition to rendering medical help to the people, the group assisted professionals profes-sionals in the area. One location they went to was a teaching hospital. With funds that had been donated, donat-ed, America Helps purchased pur-chased equipment on e-bay and took it to the hospital. "We taught the nurses how to establish a newborn infant screening program," said Garrett. Another place they went was to a school for the deaf. "They all just wanted the help so bad," said Garrett. "We worked with a little boy who was about five years old and had never spoken a word in his entire life. On the second to the last day we were there, we gave him hearing aids. "The second he got those things on, he started beaming beam-ing and running around. We probably introduced him to sound for the first time in his life." He compared the Africans to people in America Ameri-ca who may, not want to wear a hearing aid because they feel it makes them look old. "It was very interesting to see the difference," said Garrett. "Here it is so readily readi-ly available and people don't want it. Down there people were Pegging for it."
