Show .New l'l;th - Thursday, May 13, 2I4 - I'ajic 12 Basics of bird feeding can enhance a babic yard vistd By Linda Butler Backyard bird feeding is an activity that can he enjoyed by young and old alike. Birds are a pleasure to watch and listen to. Bird-song Bird-song and birds' antics can 'ring a touch of the wild ind beautiful to the suburban subur-ban landscape. Bird feeding is an inexpensive hobby that offers an opportunity ;for enjoyable encounters with some of nature's most beautiful and interesting creatures. i. A successful backyard buffet for the birds contains -four important ingredients: food, feeders, water, and 'shelter are essential for 'bird health and comfort. " The first essential ingre-'dient ingre-'dient for successful bird feeding is the right food. .Like humans, birds have distinct preferences about what and where they, eat. The use of certain types of food will encourage certain bird guests. Sunflower seed is a favorite with sparrows and chickadees. Sunflower seed comes in two types, striped and black oil. Black oil sunflower seed, is a bit smaller and softer than the striped and can be cracked open by more species. Millet, a small round whitish seed, is found in almost all bird seed mixtures. mix-tures. Nearly all small birds enjoy feasting on millet. Nyjer or thistle seed is a favorite among finches, especially the colorful goldfinches. Cracked corn and chicken chick-en scratch is a favorite of quail and pheasants.. Hummingbirds enjoy a nectar which can be purchased pur-chased in powder form and mixed at home, or can be a mixture of one part white sugar to four parts boiling water. Never add dye to hummingbird nectar, as the chemicals in it could harm the birds. A variety of feeders is available. Pheasants and quail are the most easy to please - they'll eat corn or chicken scratch right off the ground. Seed can also be served to these birds in shallow wooden feeder trays. Most birds eat from feeders feed-ers that hang from poles or trees, or from feeders that are mounted on poles. There are three basic types of hanging feeders: tall tube feeders, short hopper feed ers, and hanging trays. Tube feeders are made of clear plastic or glass and have small holes that dispense dis-pense the seed. Birds perch on perches and pluck seed from the holes. A tray at the bottom of the tube feeder helps to collect fallen seed and reduce seed on the ground. Hopper feeders are a type of box that lets the seed fall into a small tray, from which birds take the seed. Birds tend to scatter seed from these types of feeders, which can cause a bit of a mess on the ground. We often find flocks of sparrows spar-rows feeding at the base of the hanging feeders, enjoying enjoy-ing the fallen treats. Hummingbirds drink their nectar from special hummingbird feeders. Hummers, are great fun to watch as they hover and sip from the feeder ' ' A seed sock, or simple mesh bag, filled with nyjer thistle makes a wonderful feeder for goldfinches. As many as seven birds have shared one foot-long feeder sock. Water is important to birds; A birdbath will provide pro-vide both drinking ' and bathing'water. Even a metal pie pan can provide a spot of refreshment to (.a thirsty bird., Although" 'a bowl of water can be placed on the ground, birds are less vulnerable vul-nerable to predators (mostly (most-ly housecats) if the water is placed two to three feet from the ground. Remember to give the birds fresh water daily. . Shelter can be provided in a variety of wayd. Bird houses and nest boxes may encourage birds to take up permanent residence. Trees and, shrubbery near , the feeding station offer protective protec-tive cover for birds to fly to when they are threatened. Trees and shrubs provide places for the birds to rest and preen after they finish feeding. Birdfeeders, birdseed and other supplies can be found at discount, department, depart-ment, and grocery stores. thicken scratch can be purchased pur-chased by the pound at Utah County Feed in Lin-don Lin-don or Intermountain Farmers in American Fork. Bird feeding specialty stores also carry a wide variety of birdseeds, feeders, feed-ers, and other bird-related products. f i 1 m-M r K- ' 1 1 ImiiiJ i il i in nil i i fcn.ii i ilium m IhhI ; ! . bortion?
