L a 6 t month at AFHS, the students were given an opportunity to nominate someone who has done exactly that. The student body officers received many nominations nomina-tions for teachers, students, stu-dents, and janitors. Those who received the most nominations were honored in the Hero Assembly last Friday. The. assembly included touch Legislature 0 on the microphone of each representative as he was recognized by tiie Speaker of the House, so he could speak to a bill or participate in debate. Frandsen delivered some 100 telephone messages to the Senate floor each day, in addition to making calls for senators. Other duties included filing. Duties of the messengers included keeping the important impor-tant House and Senate Bill Books and Journals up to date each morning. The four books contained an accurate accu-rate and concise account of the happenings of the previous previ-ous day. It also was an account of the position of the more ithan 500 bills which were introduced by the legislature. Messengers could be sent to any office of state government govern-ment on Capitol Hill to obtain information for their legislators. Other duties ranged from opening and distributing the mail to pouring coffee. Cornell w&6 messenger for six represen-tatives. represen-tatives. The theme is At Either to discuss legislation with either a representative or a senator unless he asked their opinion. There were times, they recalled, when they hoped they would be asked their opinion on a particular bill. So last week, Lehi stepped up and lent the course $30,000. The loan helps the 30-year-old course with the short-term problem of paying pay-ing the bills and getting ready for the season. But the long-term problem of funding fund-ing necessary upgrades to the course is still being decided by all the cities. Tcnight, the Pleasant Grove City Council will decide how and how much the city will pay for the golf course improvements. To fund the beginning of the season, Tri-City may not need too much more money. According to Rick Apple 0 He was the drum major for three years, junior class president, and president of National Honor Society. He graduated from BYU with a major in zoology and a minor in biology. He began teaching at AFHS in 1969 and has taught health, general math, pre-algebra, algebra, biology, human biology, bioethics and zoology botany. As a student, he struggled. As a result, he puts forth extra effort to help students overcome their challenges and weaknesses. He requires them to present three news articles to the class each term. He believes this builds their confidence in front of a group and helps them be aware of current events. His appreciation for learning and nature is combined com-bined as he spends summers sum-mers as the lead ranger at Timpanogos Cave. He is responsible for tours and training of other rangers, including junior rangers. In the 1970s, a Five Senses Sens-es Nature Trail was created near the cave by another ranger. Allen has taken the initiative to update and assure maintenance of the trail as the mountain has changed over the years. This trail has provided learning experiences for American Fork Citizen 59 W. November to March had been unusually slow for the course, compared to the last five years where there had been mild winters, he said. The current success is attributed to the great deals the course has been offering and, of course, the weather, he said. Tlie money Lehi lent Tri-City Tri-City will still be used for other upgrades around the course to get it ready for the busy season, he said. Lehi Mayor Ken Greenwood Green-wood said he decided to lend the money, and City Council members backed hira up after the head of the course's committee told them the course was going to take out a bank loan to get it through the first part of the season. It made more sense for the city to issue a loan at no interest, Greenwood said. He emphasized that this is a 6hort-term fix to the problem. tourists, families, and students. stu-dents. Allen's zoologybotany students take their final exam on this trail. Passing the exam requires students to maintain main-tain silence on the trail which allows them to have heightened awareness of their surroundings. He believes that his classroom teaching is only valid if the students can apply it in nature or life. Allen is always willing to adapt his teaching methods to accommodate changing needs. In 1996, Allen walked across the street from the school to request permission from a homeowner home-owner to bring students to his property for some field study. The homeowner agreed but expressed dismay dis-may that the school owned so much open space yet didn't did-n't have a garden. Last month, members of tlie golf course committee went to each city presenting three plans that could cost the cities $150,000 to $2 million mil-lion depending on the upgrades. The larger figure includes a pressurized irrigation irri-gation system, which Roberts said is badly needed for tlie course to compete with other goJf courses. At a meeting earlier this month, the three mayors met to diM.us8 Tri-Citys future. The three cities have never sat down before as mayors to talk about the golf course," said Ted Barratt, American Fork mayor.
