Show Spikers to play at By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The American Fork volleyball vol-leyball team finished the regular with a road loss at Springville Oct. 28. It took five games to decide which school would go to state as a third-place team. Springville defeated American Ameri-can Fork 20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-16, 26-28, 20-18. The Cavemen (5-5) enter the tournament as the fourth seed. They will begin play tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. on court 3 against Region 5 champ Woods Cross (13-1) and will have a second match at 5 p.m.,. with the opponent to be determined by the results during the preliminary round. Play will continue through Saturday Sat-urday evening. Though the game opened with the Red Devils climbing on the scoreboard first, American Amer-ican Fork rolled ahead 5-1 on hits by Emillie Toone and Shanna King. Cedar Hatch's serving created a 9-4 lead for the Cavemen. The Red Devils went on a 6-1 scoring run that climaxed cli-maxed with a Susan Kohler kill tying the score at 10. Before Springville could break the tie, a Toone kill put American Fork back ahead. Hits by Shantell Durrant and King empowered American Ameri-can Fork to pull way ahead. After the Cavemen had built up a 22-12 lead, Springville marched back within 16-22. The Cavemen Cave-men finally managed to tie the game at 15. A Toone kill broke the tie, and trades in the lead ensued. Once the Red Devils pulled ahead 20-19, 20-19, they never let the American Amer-ican Fork retake the lead. Taking a 2-0 lead at the start of the third game, the Red Devils soon rebuffed efforts by Toone and King to. keep them from tightening their hold on the lead. Before long, Springville commanded a 9-4 edge. Cedar Hatch stirred up a rally that moved American Fork within 7-9 and 8-10. The Red Devils wouldn't let the Cavemen move closer than two points. Sumsion and Sty's hits kept Springville narrowly nar-rowly ahead until midway through the game. Toone and Andrea Andrews put up a double block that put American Fork ahead 11-10, and a seesaw battle ensued. The leads change hands so. frequently fre-quently that it was hard to guess which team would be able to come out on top. As soon as a Toone block put American Fork ahead 27-26, 27-26, a Red Devil hit the ball out of bounds, forcing the fifth game. It too saw a seesaw battle between the two schools. Sisters Emillie and Jenna Tonne threw up blocks that gave American Fork chances at winning the game. However, the Red Devils kept snatching those opportunities away, and finally, Sly delivered the kill that won the match for Springville. Jr. Jazz signups underway at AF Rec American Fork Recreation is now registering for Jr. Jazz Basketball for grades 3 through 12. Boys in grades 7 and 8 must register by Nov. 6. Boys in grades 9 through 12 must register by Nov. 13. The registration deadline for all others is Nov. 24. The fees vary according to the age level of the program. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate. Weight classes are 103, 112, 119, 125 130, 135,, 140, 145, 152, 160y 171, 189, 215 and 275 The team needs at least three wrestlers for each weight class, making a minimum of 48 spots available. Practices start Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the wrestling room.. No, tryouts or experience are required. Besides the obvious fitness benefits, Pontious said wrestling offers maximum participation.. "Theres na standing on the sidelines while someone else gets to play," he said. Interested boys may sign up in the high school commons area through tomorrow. American Fork boys invited to join junior high wrestling program A junior high wrestling program also begins Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Lone Peak wrestling room. This is for any boys in grades 5-9 that want to wrestle in the junior jun-ior high program. Any boys in the cities of American Fork, Cedar Hills, Highland or Alpine may come. The practices will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 p.m. and will run from Nov. 10 through Feb. 1.
