Cheer squad places in competition The American Fork High School cheerleader competition competi-tion team recently attend the COA West Coast Open Competition where they competed against teams from all over the west coast. The competition was held in California at University of California at Irvine. The "Hip Hop" routine placed second and the "Song Pom" routine placed fourth. Several of the cheerleaders competed in the cheer solo category with Emily Greenwood Green-wood placing first, Britney Smith placing second, and Megan Welch placing fourth. Chantel Hendry placed second in the dance solo category cat-egory and Corbin Smith and Emily Greenwood placed second in the co-ed stunt category. Cheer coach Michelle Orma'nd said, "This was a great experience for our team. "It was satisfying to see that we can be competitive "with some great cheerlead-ing cheerlead-ing squads." Members of the competition competi-tion team included Nesha Griffin, Whitney Vanderho-even, Vanderho-even, Chantel Handry, Erin Rawlings, Candice Lay cock, Alicia Lesser, Meghan Johnson, John-son, Aimee Hemmelgarn, Emily Greenwood, Heidi Hudson, Linsey Lesser, Kathryn Ruzicka, -Kristan Glazier, Brooke Litke, Megan Welch, Kilee Shelley, Britney Smith, Lacey Brems, Kelsey Andrews, Kristian Gali, Mike Warbur-ton, Warbur-ton, Corbin Smith, and Benje Mora. Shelley Elementary science students head to region at BYU Shelley Elementary recently participated participat-ed in the Alpine School District Science Fair. Ten projects were sent to the fair and seven of those projects were selected to go on to the Central Utah Science and Engineering Engi-neering Fair to be held at BYU in April. The school's science teacher and Science Fair coordinator, Patty Spigarelli said, "This is more projects than Shelley has ever sent to the regional science fair. Out of the 270 projects from 27 schools, only 75 are invited to region. We are very excited and proud of our students' accomplishments." The winning projects were Rachel Cook with "Popcorn: What's Really in the Bag?" Jessica Abram, Whitney Fuller and Kaycee Mansfield with "Out of Breath," Aubrey Hatch and Sean Wilkinson with "Clarinet Reeds," Spencer Hansen with "Peripheral Vision," Andrew Angerhofer with "It Pays to Check," Casey Caldwell, Landon Cook, and Isaac Harper with "Catapult," and Stephanie Harrison and Jensen Maze with "Let's Keep It Hot." This year, however, there will be additional prizes and gifts for everyone who enters. High school students are invited to participate in the event, which will be judged from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sat-urday, May 3, at City Hall, 31 N. Church St. The theme is "American Fork Celebrates 150 years -; Then and Now." First place winner will receive $150, with $75 for second, $50 for third, $40 for fourth, and $30 for fifth. All contestants will receive participation gifts from local sponsors, such as movie passes and food gift certificates. Those who wish further information may contact their school English, speech, drama or debate teachers. The city is creating a self-perpetuating scholarship scholar-ship fund for the contest. It will be titled Bank of American Amer-ican Fork Oratory Scholarship Scholar-ship fund and the bank will provide matching funds. Contributions will help support the youth of the city. A bronze sponsor would contribute $25, while a platinum plat-inum would contribute $200. A founding sponsor would provide $1,000. Funds will be kept in an account and the interest would provide the scholarship scholar-ship money yearly.
