Annie Pontious accounted for a third of AFs nine hits as she Track men beat SF, Emery By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent In a home track meet March 30, the American Fork Cavemen defeated the Spanish Fork Dons and Emery Spartans in the boys' division, placing second in the girls' divi sion. "We came into this meet thinking Spanish Fork and Emery would defeat us. They're very good teams," said American Fork Coach Art Taylor. "We scored in almost every event." The boys team scores read American Fork 68, Spanish Fork 63, and Emery 47. In the girls' division, team scores were Spanish Fork 78, American Fork 63, and Emery 25. Brian Glazier shined in the meet as he won the boys' 100-meter 100-meter dash and placed second in the boys' 200-meter dash. Teammate Joseph Rowley placed second in the 200. In the girls' 200, Deanna Earl took fourth. During the 800-meter race, Jon Burgess took second, Jeff Hunziker third, and Rowley fourth. Katrina Cartwright won the girls' 800 while Natalie Hunsaker placed third in it. Hunziker won the boys' 3,200-meter run by a few seconds sec-onds ahead of Chris Leiter and Will Wickert, who finished second sec-ond and third respectively. "When we scored one, two, three in the boys' 3,200, that put us over the top at the end of the meet," said Taylor. American Fork also dominated domi-nated the girls' 3,200. At home March 23, the visiting Payson Lions narrowly defeated them 3- 2. The Cavemen then got shut out 5-0 on the Pleasant Grove Vikings' courts. On Tuesday, the Cavemen controlled the first two singles matches. Caveman Richard Shelley won 6-0, 6-1 over Dustin Hawes. In No. 2 singles play, Caveman Tigh Gunderson overcame Nick Holt 6-3, 6-1. The No. 3 singles match pushed the meet to Payson's way. Chase Gunderson lost that match by scores of 7-5, 1-6,6-4. In the No. 1 doubles match, Lions Ryan Haskell and Judd Shoell outlasted Todd Washington and Nick Hoover 4- 6, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles match saw Payson's Kevin Massey and Josh Meek defeat Jake Larson and Steven Wentz 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the March 25 No. 1 singles sin-gles match, Jacob Wilky beat Shelley 6-3, 6-0. The No. 2 singles sin-gles match Jumpei Taguchi outlasted Tigh Gunderson 6-1, 6-0. Mike Stansfield outplayed Micah Scott 7-6, 6-4. In the No. 1 doubles match, Tim Wilkins and Matt Christiansen downed Washington and Hoover 7-6. The No. 2 doubles match saw Ryan and Kyle Andeson down Wentz and Larson 6-4, 6-2. In a snow-delayed game played Monday night, the Cavemen lost to fourth-ranked Spanish Fork 6-0. "It was a good defensive effort," said Coach Chad Seely. "We made a few errors at inopportune inop-portune times, but to hold a team like that to six runs is great. We just couldn't get our own offense going." The Cavemen lost to Payson 10-0 on March 25 and Lone Peak won 11-0 on the 23rd. They host Springville tomorrow tomor-row and visit Provo Tuesday. American Fork excelled in both the boys' and girls' divisions divi-sions of the relays, winning both medley races. American Fork also finished first in the girls' 400-meter and 1,600-meter 1,600-meter relays. American Fork fared well against the Dons and Spartans in field events also. In the boys' javelin, Jason Ruch took first, Jared Smith third, and Burgess fourth. Derek Beardall won the boys' shot put and finished second sec-ond in the discus. In the girls' long jump, Jessica Cook won first, Kristi Loveridge second, and Marianne Wagaman third. Keith Kennard took third in both the boys' 110- and 300-meter 300-meter high hurdles. Lauren Browning finished second in the girls' 100-meter hurdles while Crosley took second in the 300-meter hurdles. Matt Brinkerhoff took third in the boys' pole vault. American Fork is scheduled to compete April 9-10 in the Timpanogos Invitational at Timpview. She was named to the second sec-ond team by the Salt Lake Tribune and garnered honorable honor-able mention from the Deseret News. The point guard has also been second team All-Region for the past two seasons. The daughter of Tim and Deb Pontious of American Football Bears cheer tryouts set Fifth grade girls attending Legacy, Highland or Cedar Ridge elementary schools are invited to try out for the sixth grade cheerleading squad for the little league football Highland Bears. Those interested are invited to attend clinics at Heritage Fork, she has been a legitimate varsity triple-sport athlete for the past two years. She played JV basketball as a freshman, but was on the varsity soccer and softball teams even that year. She was named first-team All-Region in soccer for the past two years, and in softball last season. She has also been on the S.U.U. camp all-star team and Utah all-star team. She has another year to go but is aiming at a college basketball bas-ketball scholarship. Gymnastics Nine local gymnasts from Orem's All American Gymnastics competed on Saturday, March 13, at the USU Spectrum in Logan at the USU Jr. Aggie Invitational. The All-American teams took home the first place team trophy. Summerisa Bell of American Fork competed in the Level 5 competition. Soccer AFHS VARSITY: The Cavemen challenged the Timpview Thunderbirds on March 30, who managed to edge past them 2-1. 2-1. Cameron Card led the way with a goal and two assists. Alex Quintero added one more of each; Jake Babbel and Luke Shelton had the other scores, with Dustin Derek providing the other assist. Shelton provided both goals in a 2-1 win over Springville on the 27th, with help from Derek Beardall and Derek. At the Spanish Fork on the 31st, the Cavemen battled to a 1-1 tie during regulation but lost in a shootout. Jordan Keith got the tying score. Softball The LEHI ICEBREAKER SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT has been scheduled for April 16 and 17 at Lehi Veterans Park. This is a USSSA-sanctioned, men's class D event.
