Show Training School Christmas Program Stllfbnts Learn . - f . A " ta "BLITHE SPIRIT"-M. Scott Wilkinson and Patricia Wilkinson perform scene from Noel Coward's famous comedy "Blithe Spirit", to be presented beginning tonight, December 14, at the old American Fork Junior High School. They are members of the Lighthouse Repertory Theatre. "I've wanted to do the 'Nutcracker' here at the school for several years, but just felt it was impossible. This year we are going to do it," David 0. Brockbank enthused, as he announced the Utah State Training School's Christmas production for 1978. Residents of the school-some 300 of them- will do their own adaptation of the well-known Christmas ballet based on the German story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," by E.T.A. Hoffman. Hoff-man. "We have a rat king," Mr. Brockbank chuckled. He adapted the story to the abilities of the training school residents and will direct the performances. The story will play against the background of the great Tschaikovsky ballet. It incorporates the love of make-believe make-believe by the heroine, Mary, who dreams of live toy soldiers, dancing mice, waltzing flowers, singing snowflakes, and, of course, her nutcracker nut-cracker prince. Also included on the program at the Training School is the "Traditional Christmas Story," Mr. Brockbank said. Also new in the production is the fact that performers are learning dance steps and will do their own type of ballet for such numbers as the "Sugar Plum Fairy." Debbie Wing, a dance instructor in-structor from American Fork, and members of the training school educational staff are working with the cast members to teach them the simple ballet steps. The training school program, although featuring a new story each year (in addition to the Christmas story), is a tradition in American Fork. This year, six performances will be given. These include Saturday, Monday, Mon-day, Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 16, 18, 19, 20) at 7:00 p.m. and matinees Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 19 and 20) at 2:00 p.m. AH performances are in the new auditorium on the Training School campus. The public is invited. There is no admission charge. Some fifty members of the educational staff at the school are assisting with costumes, staging, backgrounds and other similar details. 'ancing a Jr. High School "One, two, cha-cha-cha!" These words are ringing out at the American Fork Junior High School as seventh grade students learn the finer points of dancing. The classes are being taught as part of seventh grade physical education classes, according to Gary Keetch, Principal, with Alma Heaton of the Brigham Young University faculty serving ser-ving as instructor. Several of Mr. Heaton's students from BYU are assisting. The dance program is being conducted in cooperation with the American Fork City Recreation Committee, it was noted, with the students not only learning lear-ning the "cha-cha", but also several other dance steps including the waltz. "The biggest problem at this age, is to get the kids to hold hands," Mr. Heaton laughed, noting in AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN Thursday, December 14, 197S a few years this changes. "Right now, they are shy," he said. He feels if they learn the basic dance steps now, it helps them when they do get into high school or even later in junior high school and they go to the dances. Ballroom dance steps are coming back, he said, and it helps for the youngsters to learn the steps early. The American Fork Junior High School is the only school in the area where Mr. Heaton assists with the program, according ac-cording to Ora Chipman, a member of the City Recreation Committee who arranged for the program. erformers r Lighthouse iory Troupe Lighthouse Repertory Theatre begins its 1973-79 season Thursday, in the former American Fork Junior High School band room with "Blithe Spirit," Noel Coward's famous comedy.
