Show Daredevils Take to the Skies There's a new sport sweeping the country. That is, if you could call leaping from jagged cliffs and mountain peaks strapped to a large kite a sport. This new phenomenon is referred to as hang gliding, sky sailing, sky surfing or kite soar- X 1,1 J ing in some circles, and as insanity, in-sanity, suicide and macho-daredevil macho-daredevil nonsense in some others Linn C. Baker, president of the Ltah Safety Council onerea the following information and observations on this sport: -Most of todays soaring kiles have a common ancestor, a triangular kite designed by Francis M. Rogallo. The Rogal-lo Rogal-lo kite was conceived as part of a NASA research project to replace parachutes. NASA abandoned the kite because of ( ) 4 -s n "i4 ( 'Li'' J 1,r- 1 CONSTERNATION - when concrete was poured in front of the Alpine Publishing Company on paper day, the boss was locked out until a "catwalk" could be placed over the wet sidewalk. In turn, this prototype glider spawned many other models and variations. -The principle is a simple one. Participants take a running leap into the wind off a cliff, or they are pulled or catapulted into the air, or dropped from a balloon, etc. Soaring into the wind, the kites can circle, bank, climb and float gently to the ground ... if everything goes-right. goes-right. However, Baker reminds us, "The air, like the sea, can be cruel and unpredictable. Sudden downdrafts or updrafts or unexpected unex-pected cross winds can bring sudden and unavoidable disaster disas-ter to even the most experienced exper-ienced kite pilots." Because of the inherent dangers dang-ers of the sport, many originators origina-tors and early enthusiasts (who are still living) already have abandoned hang gliding. Last year, Swiss hang glider champion Eticnne Rithner announced an-nounced he was quilting the sport because too many people were being killed, many of them experts. On the west coast. Jack Haberstroh, who headed the world's largest hang-gliding school, sold his interest in the firm "because of the incredible number of people being hurt and killed in hang gliders." After much research, Haberstroh con cluded that "the sport is so dangerous, it is in a class by itself." Even among those who praise and promote nang gliding, there are those who have reservations. reserva-tions. The ltah Safety Council suggests that would-be kite pilots wait fur these improved craft to be perfected. per-fected. Baker concluded, "It's one of those situations where the National Safety Council's current cur-rent slogan seems to apply -"Take l ime ... TO BE Safe."
