(Special to the Citizen) To what extent are homeowners in Utah County going in for alcerations, improvements im-provements and additions to their property? How much are they spending per year for suc h purposes? A survey shows that they are putting a record amount of money mon-ey into such refurbishing. That is what is happening, also, in most other areas of the country. In large measure, the upsurge is attributable to the scarcity of mortgage money, which stands in the way of the sale and purchase pur-chase of new homes. Added to that is the high cost of construction construc-tion and the general uncertainties uncertain-ties of the times, which deter families from taking on new obligations. As a result, they are staying where they are and are fixing up what they have. In Utah County, homeowners spent an estimated $13,203,000 in the past year for upkeep and improvement, based upon the latest government reports on average outlays per housing unit un-it in the regional area. !t amounted to an average expenditure of $383 per unit, in contrast to the $295 spent in 1970. The national average was $368. Just how much has been going into home improvements is indicated indi-cated in data compiled by the Department of Commerce, which has been conducting sam ple surveys throughout the country. Its figures show that some $13.9 faiilion was so-spent in the past year. That was $1.4 billion more than in the previous year. The increase was due, in part, to the higher cost of lahor and materials.' Mostly, however, it reflects the attitude of homeowners. Their feeling, in general, is that with economic conditions as they are, they will otr in Owir present locations fur a icmg time to come. lion outlay shows that $10.8 billion bil-lion of it was for additions, alterations al-terations and major rcplace-1 rcplace-1 lien's snd the ether hi'!'m! for maintenance and repairs. How did Utah County residents resi-dents spend their $13,203,000 share of it? A good part of it went for interior painting. Other major expenditures were for exienor painting, roofing, plumbing and kitchen and bedroom remodeling, remodel-ing, the area reports indicate. How often we fail to realize our good fortune in living in a country where happiness is more than a lack of tragedy. t'&ISUGAic CO.
