General Conference to Convene This Weekend Thousands of Mormon leaders from throughout the world will gather in Salt Lake City October 1-3 for the 141st semi-annual World Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Fielding Smith, 95, president pre-sident of the 3 million member church, will preside over all of the conference sessions, which will be held in the famous Mormon Mor-mon Tabernacle on Temple Square. President Smith is a grandnephew of Joseph Smith, the man who organizedthe church in western New York April 6, 1830. He and 39 other men in the leading councils of the church will be the speakers at the conference's con-ference's six general sessions and also at a session for members mem-bers of the priesthood. Assisting Assist-ing President Smith in the overall over-all direction of the conference will be his counselors, President Harold B. Lee and President N. Eldon Tanner. Mormon conference will be the appearance of the world famous Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The 375-voice ensemble is known widely for Its network radio broadcasts, television and concert appearances and recordings. re-cordings. The choir, under the direction of Richard P. Condie, will provide music during the three-day series of meetings, accompanied by the great Tabernacle Ta-bernacle Organ, one of the most famous musical instruments in the world. The choir has been heard every Sunday on network radio for the past four decades. It has also performed in concert in various parts of the U. S., in Europe and Mexico and at the inaugurals inaugu-rals of Presidents Nixon and Johnson. It's repertoire includes more than 1,000 songs ranging from classical to contemporary, both religious and secular. EMPHASIS IN SAVIOR'S TEACHINGS The speakers at the conference are expected to place con siderable emphasis on the tea chings and commandments of Jesus Christ, with reminders Special MHrPf iri IP that these teachings have not become outmoded in our day despite the claims of anti-Christ forces in the world. The Church believes In the literal divinity of Jesus Christ, his ministry upon the earth and in his resurrection. Indeed, it considers the Savior as the head of the church today. Not only do the Mormons be lieve wholeheartedly in the teach ings of Jesus Christ as found In the Bible, but they also believe he spent time among the people of ancient America and that these people also recorded his teach ings. This record of the Savior Is contained in a volumt of scripture scrip-ture known as the Book of Mormon and used in the church as a companion volume to the Bible. FAMILY UNITY STRESSED Among the many matters of great significance to be treated by conference speakers will be that of the family and how to strengthen family unity.
