Show THE, AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN, Thurtday, pre 28, 1981 Utah Keeps Pace With Nation in Medical Advances During Past Year The year of 1967 has been an eventful and progressive twelve months in medicine from a Utah as well as a national point of view, according to Harold Bowman,; Bow-man,; executive secretary of the Utah State Medical Association. Mr, Bowman points out the "Muzzle Measles" campaign as the most spectacular development! develop-ment! of the year In the state, Utahj became the best immunized immun-ized state in the country, so far as n)easles is concerned, with an estimated 93 percent protected pro-tected as a result of the statewide! state-wide! campaign. The program, second statewide campaign of this Ikind, was Jointly promoted by the Utah State Medical Association Asso-ciation and the Utah State Health Department. It js Impossible to tabulate the number of children who will be spared the heartaches that otherwise! other-wise! would have resulted from menfel retardation, deafness, and encephalitis resulting from the disease. It ;also was heartwarming to note; that not a single case of polio has been reported since the previous statewide immunization campaign sponsored by the doc-torsjof doc-torsjof Utah. Mr. Bowman also pointed out the amazing progress in computerized comput-erized medicine at the IDS Hospital Hos-pital as another outstanding highlight, high-light, Under the leadership of Dr. Homer Warner, Utah has become one of the pacesetters in this very Important phase of medial research and development. develop-ment. Utah doctors also came to the support of Governor Rampton and the Slate Welfare Commission in offering to "take care of any indigent patients, regardless of the Individual's ability to pay." Mr. Bowman pointed out that this has always been the practice of Utah' physicians, but the policy was re-emphasized at this time Mouiifein Fuel Drills Deepest Well Church Buttes unit wellNo. 19, an exploratory natural gas well drilled at the Church Buttes field In southwestern Wyoming, was recently acidized at a depth between be-tween 18,050 and 18,200 feet and Is now producing sour gas at a dally rate of 6,400,000 cubic feet, It was reported recently by M. M. Fidlar, president of Mountain Fuel Supply Company. The Church Buttes field is operated op-erated by Mountain Fuel and is Jointly owned with Union Pacific Railroad Company. The well was drilled to a total depth of 19,526 feet and was then pliSged back to 18,626 feet prior to completion, Mr. Fidlar said. The producing interval Is in the Morgan formation of Pennsylvan-ian Pennsylvan-ian age, he said. Some 19,500 gallons of nine per cent formic acid and 40,000 gallons of 28 per cent hydrochloric acid were then pumped into the well to stimulate: stim-ulate: production. Gas is flowing from the well at a wellhead pressure of 1,550 pounds through a one-inch choke, he said. The gas has a heat value of 855 British thermal units. The well also is producing produc-ing 310 barrels a day of 48-degree 48-degree API gravity sour condensate conden-sate along with some water, he added. The well will be tested further after the rig Is removed, Mr. Fidlar said. Drilling was commenced com-menced on September 19, 1966. This is the deepest well ever drilled by Mountain Fuel, Mr. Fidlar said. He pointed out that gas presently is being produced at the Church Buttes field from the Dakota formation at an average aver-age depth of 12,700 feet. Inasmuch Inas-much as the new well was drilled drill-ed to an objective far beyond that depth, it was an exploratory or wildcat" well, he added. to make sure that no one in need was wanting for needed medical service. On the national medical front, Mr. Bowman said that: "Heart disease, chronic non-tuberculous lung disease, abortion, alcoholism, alcohol-ism, and drug abuse have been identified as outstanding U. S. public health problems Milch will require Imaginative and large-scale large-scale medical efforts In the years Medical news during the year also included new developments in the field of artificial and transplanted internal organs; some successes in vaccine development de-velopment and new biochemical weapons against viral diseases; continued follow-up of promising Icdlia 111 llic lliaicij ui LAiitci the opening of five new medical schools, and many other heart-warming heart-warming advances in medical research. One of the most disturbing developments of the year has been the much -public! zed Use of the "mind expander drug lysergic acid diethylamide (IDS).. The probable damage of this drug to the chromosomes portends trouble trou-ble for future generations. Increasing success has been enjoyed in the transplantation of internal organs, particularly kidneys kid-neys and livers, and a great in the development of new ana effective vaccines. "At least four new vaccines should reach important stages of development within the next few months," Mr Bowman stated. "These are for mumps, German measles, streptococcal Infections, and Rh disease." Venereal disease has become a big new problem in public health. New medical schools at University Uni-versity of Arizona, Blown University, Uni-versity, University of Hawaii, Michigan State, and Pennsylvania Pennsylvan-ia State will help in the grow-ing grow-ing need for more doctors in the future. "But," Mr. Bowman stated, "this merely serves warning that now is the time to act for more facilities to meet the fast -growing needs of the future.'
