UEDD JEWELRY MAIN STREET Lehl, Utah A cool-headed Grand Junction, Colorado, private pilot brought his light plane down safely at the Provo Airport Saturday night in an emergency belly landing after a gear malfunctioned. Douglas C!ghorn, 41, former American Fork man.nowaGrand Junction mining contractor, landed land-ed the plane with his two sons, Blake, 14, and Bryce, 16, as passengers. None were injured and the plane suffered only light damage Including a bent propel-lor propel-lor and one crumpled landing wheeL The landing was deliberately made in the grass to one side of the runway, after the pilot had stalled his ship down to about 75 miles per hour. It skidded only 30 or 40 yards before coming to a stop. It did not nose over. The ship was a slngle-englned six-plan Cessna 210. Two fire engines and an am bulance were rushed to the airport air-port by Provo City after the pilot radioed he was In trouble. Fortunately, none of the equip ment was needed. The pilot reconstructed the event this way: He took off from the Provo Airport about 7 p.m. after a visit with his mother, Mrs. Cleone Cleghorn, in Am. Fork. Immediately on the takeoff he knew he had landing gear trouble when the left wheel refused to retract. Neither would it lower to complete landing position, but stuck straight down Instead of the out-posltlon necessary for landing. Radioing his difficulty, he spent about an hour In the air above the airport attempting to get the landing gear functioning. Failing in that, he decided to deliberately crash land In the grass to the side of the runway, with his nose wheel and the other good landing wheel retracted. The malfunctioning wheel collapsed col-lapsed on impact and the plane slid safely to a stop on its belly. All occupants, seat belts tightly fastened, were unhurt. One of the boys declared it wasn't even a particularly rough landing. Mr. Cleghorn planned to return re-turn to his mother's home Sat- i urday night, then proceed as soon as possible with the repair of his plane.
