Sorensen. W. Sorensen. "Our basic purpose is to train people in the vocational-technical vocational-technical trades areas, and most of our students at Utah Tech are in these categories -but our general education opportunities op-portunities offer an excellent chance for students to find themselves if they are uncertain as to their career goals," said President Sorensen. "Our credit in these areas is certified by the Northwest Association Asso-ciation of Secondary and Higher Schools, which fully accredits Utah Technical College at Provo. Our credits are therefore transferrable to any public four-year four-year college or university in Utah by state regulation, and to Brigham Young University, a COLLEEN HANSEN Colleen Hansen Wins Honors at Beauty College Miss Colleen Hansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Wen-dell P. Hansen was recently chosen to represent Continental College of Beauty in the State Cosmetology Contest. The contest will be held at the Hotel Utah Sept. 29th. Miss Hansen was also selected selec-ted to enter the Continental College Col-lege of Beauty "Hall of Fame." Colleen graduates October 12th and plans on employment at Erma's Hop.se of Beauty. private school, through an agreement with that institution." institu-tion." According to Grant Cook, director of the Utah Tech general education division, there are still openings in these areas and students wishing to enter them may do so without a late fee penalty anytime during the coming week, the earlier the better, he said. Late fee penalty at Utah Tech takes effect Oct. 1. "We offer nearly 100 separate classes in the general education division - ranging from art to zoology - on a two year college level," said Mr. took. "The general areas of study include English, health education, physical education, art, foreign (Spanish), journalism, journa-lism, literature, music, public speaking, speed reading, technical techni-cal writing (business reports, technical descriptions and related areas), biology, ecology, zoology, college mathematics (calculas, technical math and algebra), astronomy, photography, photogra-phy, physics, economics, geography, history, political science, sci-ence, psychology and sociology. "Most of our subjects in general education relate to our vocational-technical trade areas and are taken by students in the latter categories - but they may also be taken to fill groups. "One of the great advantages is that a student may complete the first two years at Utah Tech and earn an associate degree. If he completes only two years at a four-year institution, he is a dropout, at Utah Tech when he completes two years he is a graduate with a degree. If he wishes, he may then transfer to a four year college as a junior and complete the requirements for a bachelor's degree," Mr. Cook explained. "Some of these general education educa-tion classes are offered in the evening school as well as the regular daytime curriculum," said Mr. Cook, "and these can be ascertained through inquiry at the school. Most of the general education classes, however, are in the day school." Mr. Cook cited the statement by Governor Calvin L. Rampton on a recent visit to Utah Tech. to the effect that the institution in-stitution needed a healthy combination com-bination of vocational and academic subjects, even though it is basically a vocational school. 1 'ntacn enn spfemisv 1 m y 1972 Ccpri 2-dr.
