The University of Utah will be host Dee. 28-30 to 400 high school students and teachers for a series of Holiday Science Lectures. The lectures, on The Origin of the Elements," will be presented by Dr. William A. F o w 1 e r , a distinguished physicist phys-icist at the California Institute of Technology.. ,. Some three students and one teacher from American Fork High School have accepted invitations in-vitations to attend the lectures. The lectures, sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in cooperation with the University, are modeled after the famed Christmas Lectures of the Royal Roy-al Institution in Great Britain, started in 1826 by Michael Faraday. Five other Christmas series are being given at Boston, Chicago, Kansas Kan-sas City, New York and Tempe, two will be given at Easter in Cleveland and Los Angeles; and two residential series are planned plan-ned for June In the midwest and the northwest. Contest (or Youths Judging in the sixteenth Annual Elks Youth Leadership contest has been scheduled for Jan. 5, Earl M. Frizz ell, Provo Elks 849 Lodge Youth Activities chairman, said today. Mr: Frizzell, in announcing the Judging date, urged early completion of application blanks since there Is considerable related re-lated information required. The contest has separate divisions for boys and girls, who will be judged on their leadership ability, citizenship appreciation and perseverance, resourcefulness resourceful-ness and sense of honor. Candidates Candi-dates for the awards must be under 19 years of age. Those, Interested are requested to submit a glossy photograph, a statement of 300 words by the applicant, one of 200 words by a parent or other person, any clippings, photos, etc., deemed pertinent and two letters of endorsement from persons not related to the candidate. can-didate. . Mr. Frizzell said first place winners each will receive a $100 U. S. Savings Bond; Second Place a $75 bond; and third place a $50 bond.
