COiuML -V v ' Forest Service Urges Care in Fire Making Recognizing Summer Recrea tion Months, the Intermoun- taln: Region of tht' Forest Service Ser-vice makes a plea that visitors to National Forests in the Reg-Ion Reg-Ion take care in preparing fires during the coming dry months. In spite of detp snows during past winter months and a rainy spell during the spring, the forests for-ests of Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming can count on lit tle moisture during the months of July, August and September. Additionally, che&tgrass, a normal annual fire problem in this region, has grown with greater vigor as a result of the abundance of moisture. Fortunately, Fortu-nately, the late spring held It back somt'what and the hazard of fire along . the mountain fronts ' tias-been-delayedr' Foresters For-esters are not optimistic about mid-summer,, early fall months, when the drletl-out cheatgrnss needs only a single spark , to start a troublesome, often expensive ex-pensive fire. Forest fires in the Intermoun- taln Region during the 1961 summer season destroyed 32,000 acres of timber, valued at approximately ap-proximately $1,330,000. The loss of wildlife, ai'othetlc and recre ational value, the detriment to the existing watersheds and the actual expenses in combatting the' 1,040 fires raises the cost of negligence to a figure none ot jis can afford. : ches. ' Clear all' grass, leaves, and sticks In a six foot circle, using a shovel for best efficiency. Dig a shallow 8-inch pit to further contain the campfire. Follow the old Indian practice prac-tice of building a fire only as large as necessary. A smaller fire Is usually adequate and naturally easier to control. Avoid moving burning logs except when necessary, Each shift causes sparks to soar upward up-ward In the wind, and sometimes some-times in the direction of waiting wait-ing fuel neferby. . Keep a bucket of water handy han-dy along with a green bough. The water will be handy for culinary purposes and can be used in an ttoergency. The bough can be used to beat 'but any small spark-caused fires that might start. After you have finished with your campflre, cover It with dirt, again using, the shovel. Mix dirt and coals thoroughly A A ft waf j41tt . nuu IIIVIV W ; Now, pour on the water. Mix again with the shovel. When you are thoroughly, convinced con-vinced that every spark has beeasmothered or drowned; prove it by going through the mixture with your bare hands. Personal satisfaction, the ap preciation of millions of National Nat-ional Forest users, and tht? pos sible example you set for; on lookers will be the rewards. You can's ask for more. The Forest Service requests that campers and picnickers observe ob-serve a simple set of campflre manners, along with the usual rules of fire prevention. First, select your fire site carefully.
