Iff an earning a well as a learn-big learn-big clan. Tht pupils learn how to raita oysters. Like farm cropa, oysters can be planted and harvested. Thier growth can be encouraged and the yield sustained by scientific methods of management and conservation. From two bed! on which they planted seed oysters two and a half years ago. the boy3 harvested an estimated 5.700 bushels in 1950. Figured at an average price of $2.50 per bushel, that comes to something like $14,250. After paying back the tidewater fisheries department depart-ment for the seed oysters, investing in more of them, and putting a per-centage per-centage of the take into class projects, the boys cleared about $40 each. But 10 far si educational and conservation authorities art concerned, con-cerned, the actual profits are strictly strict-ly secondary. They also aee it at an example to older residents resi-dents of the benefits of sound conservation con-servation practices. The boys take classroom work and meet once a week to make and repair equipment They spend at least half a day every month at the Chesapeake biological- labora- ftory at Solomons, making field ob servations, taking inventories of their stock, and studying problems of resource management The class was formed late in 1947 by about 20 boys, on their own initiative. in-itiative.
