Forest Fire Prevention Urged Now Forest fires destroyed enough timber in the United States dur ing 1942 to build 20,000 Liberty ships, or 2,000,000 army truck bodies. Range fires destroyed winucr ieea ior tnousands of head of sheep and cattle. And fires on our mountain sides re duced the water hold capacity of important waiersneds. For these reasons, control of Utah's forest, range, and watershed water-shed fires Is one of the prime objectives of Fire Prevention Week, which will be held as a result of Presidential proclamation, proclama-tion, from October 3 to 9. Wood is essential to the farmer farm-er faced with the need to build new production structures tn house his expanding production, ior ience construction, and for fuel. Wood has manv uses in war industry as well. Thousands of head of cattle and sheep, upon which we de pend ior meat, wool and leather, will need every bit of range feed this year and next if we hope to do our best in supplying these commodities to our nation at war. The greater part of Utah's farm lands, and every city and town in the state depends on watersheds for its most precious substance WATER, The greatest single enemy to timber, grazing lands, and watersheds water-sheds is FIRE. Money alone cannot prevent fires If sufficient manpower is unavailable and if ordinary citi zens persist in careless habits. Citizens are urged to enroll during dur-ing Fire Prevention Week in the Forest Fire Fighters Service which has been set un in each county. The coordinator In Utah County is Forest Supervisor ueorge Larson, and Sheriff rneron Hall Is the Countv Fire Warden. Even those who cannot fight forests, ranee, and water shed fires actively, can concen irate on neiping to prevent them. ricnic nres. for instance. snouio aiwavs De comnletelv ex tlnguished before leavine the picnic area. Cigarettes should never De tossed. from the win dows of automobiles use , the ash tray. And matches should be broken in two before being aiscaraea to make sure they are out. At this season, hunters should take particular precau lions to Drevent fires. Let Utah citizens become so "fire conscious" during the week of October 3 to 9 that we will have no more fires as a result of carelessness. Remember, fires fight ior the axis!
