Luckily for me Alice wasn't at home when I crawled up the front stairs. I knew she was out because a letter was sticking out of the mail-box- . I opened the letter and let out another groan. My former rival, George Wilson, was inviting him-self to our place for a couple of weeks. We'd have to put up with his crowing about how well he managed the Sure-Fir- e chain of stores. And me out of workl "Don't take it ao bard, John." I looked up to see my friend Charlie Bates shuffling down the front walk. "I heard about old man McDuff giving you the pink alip this morn-ing. What's up?" "He claims I got too many radi-cal ideas for a small business. But If you think losing my Job is tough luck, look at this!" I held George's crumpled letter under his nose. Charlie frowned at it. "Isn't he the guy who beat you to that Job with the Sure-Fir- e Company a few years ago?" he asked, studying the signature. "He'a got crust-writ- ing to you." "And I think I know why. Re-member how thick he and Alice used to be? He got ioy Job; now he wants to steal my wife." "You're nuts!" laughed Charlie. at my summer cottage?" "Charlie, you're a real pal!" I shouted. "When this George Wilson shows up I'll tell him you're In South America. I'll even mail you the daily papers so you can look over the "help wanted' column." It started out fine. Alice and I enjoyed some of the best fishing we'd seen in years. I even spotted a job In the Shelbyville paper that might bear looking into. Each-even- ing I went to bed chuckling over how clever we were Charlie and L Good old Charlie! Down deep, however, I was uneasy. Not without reason. One morning Charlie Bates' station wagon turned Into the winding drive. The chubby little figure that hopped out of the car looked suspiciously fa-miliar. I would have darted Into the woods only Alice blocked the door-way. "George Wilson!" she cried rapturously. "Of all people I Geor-ge, you look wonderful! Doesn't he, John?" He looked like a bleary-eye- d toad to me, but I said: "Sure. You look great, George." I was looking around for a suit-able weapon when Alice caught my sleeve: "Did you hear that, John? George Is married now." "Did you see that axe-hand-that what? Married? And by gol-ly George you look great Just great! Doesn't he, Charlie?" Charlie loosened his collar. George Wilson got to the point "Maybe. Look at it from where Alice stands: George Wilson is a financial success. I'm a failure not even a job." "Alice doesn't know about that 7et" "She'll find out soon enough. A secret doesn't keep long In a small town like HiUcrest It doesn't take long to learn about It Besides, Alice always did like George Wil-son." "You got a one track mind, groaned Charlie. "But I got an Idea that'll keep her in the dark about your Job and George Wil-o- n. She's been after you all sum-mer to go on a trip, hasn't she? Why not ipend couple of weeks at once. "Sure-Fir- e is opening branch store in Hillcrest, John. I made this trip down here t. ask a favor of you: will you manage the store for us? You know the busi-ness as well as I do. Didn't you get my letter?" I was gulping for the third time when Charlie cried: "Oh my good-ness I The letter! I forgot to give it to him, Mr. Wilson." Alice nodded agreement I put my hand out to steady myself and George grabbed It at once "Want to ibake on it, eh? Good. |
