Awe Ml Abraham was now old. and the Lord had blessed him abundantly.1 He now spoke to his head servant, whom, he had given the manage ment of his goods, and made, him' give a solemn promise under oath. that he would not seek a wife for his son, Isaac, of the daughters ofj the Canaanltes; but that he should go to the country from whence1 Abraham had come, and there get1 a wife for Isaac. The servant de-! murred, and said, perhaps the maiden mai-den to whom he should speak, would not accept the proposal. But Abraham Abra-ham answered: "Jehovah, the God or neaven, who took me from my. father's house, and from the land of my nativity, and who spoke unto me. and did swear unto me, saying, 'un to thee will I give this land' he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take wife for my son froml thence. And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then, thou' shalt be clear from my oath." The servant then took ten camels and provisions and presents, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. He arrived there about nightfall, and when he came to the well outside of the city, to which the women of community would come for water, he rested with his camels, and called upon the Lord that by his assistance he would be success ful in carrying out the obligation placed , upon him.
