" '"' " A. P. OAISFORD, JR.. JDITOB TOO MUCH ADMIRATION FOR LAWLESSNESS It is all very well to declare and it should be declared when ccasion demands that useless, foolish unenforceable laws tend to create a disrespect for law and authority. Yet every sensible person knows that is not the full explanation for a light, flippant or indifferent indif-ferent attitude toward law in this country.. . A good part of the trouble trou-ble is that the American admiration for smartness and cleverness is allowed to extend itself entirely too far. We have allowed ourselves to -.acclaim the fellow who "eets by" with practically anything, pro- vided he. displays cleverness in the performance. So the reminder of Attorney General Sargent about the danger of a jesting attitude amounts to a national rebuke. The condition against which the attorney general protests is a national characteristic. character-istic. It is traditional. It will not be easily changed. Yet the thoughtful thought-ful person will admit it must be changed. As the attorney general says, the American people cannot go on poking fun at the law, at attempts to enforce or observe it and attempts to assist m that endeavor, en-deavor, without disastrous consequences. Education and a persisting demand for wiser legislation will have to have a large part in bringing a change. The first require ment is a different attitude toward law itself. There must be an end to admiration of lawlessness, of criminals and other offenders, just because a certain degree of clevernesg happens to be exhibited. The enemies of society, in whatever manner they display themselves, must be condemned for what they are. Only on that condition can law be THE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY PROGRESS t Parents are frequently urged to take an interest in the public schools of their city, as if they were the only ones that had any special concern with them. But -every interest in the city is affected by them. Unless a city has well developed schools, it is regarded as ;.juja.ttxacjlive;..a's. a residence town nnd people will avoid sueh a place if they ran. - ITenee the business men and the wape-earners and the farmers and all elements should take a keen interest in school questions. They should pay taxes cheerfully for the best the district can afford. , They should talk school problems over with teachers and parents, and form intelligent opinions here in our district as to the needs of our schools and what can be done to make theru Bjill more useful. SUGGESTIONS TO THE COURTS "VYc still maintain that the prosecutor should have an equal show ing with the defense in court. As it is all the advantage is with the man on trial and his counsel. For instance, the defense .has more strikes at the jury, and doesn't have to take the stand unless he fir lis When Buick im-proves im-proves upoir Buick" the standard for the year is set Buick for 1928 introduces higher standard of beauty and luxury than the world his erer lcnoBuickf interiors ire 5 as modish as exquisite drawing-rooms' as harmoniously colored and as comfortable. It is true that during the next Bereral months the prospects are very fatorable to the Industry but alrveys do not bear out that any acute shortage is going to b experienced and the department of agriculture glres the opinion that conditions do ot Justify any expansion in breeding herds. The receipts of cattle and calvew this fall "ar - anticipated -to" he lees r than in the past several years, as the number of cattle throughout the pountry has decreased some ten Mil lion head of late years- However. the curtailment ot the marketing of cattle during the next few months may be attributed, in part at least, to the holding back of considerable breeding atock jto " replenlah the herda in the range states. One of the factors which will play an important part in assuring an ade quale supply ot cattle is the condition condi-tion of feed throughout the country. The price of corn la higher than a year ago but the corn crop has re. vived to an unexpected extent and it is now figured there will be a ( per cent larger crop in the corn belt slates' West bt the Mississippi River than last year which will result in a substantial feeder cattle demand comparing favorably with last year. Due to fewer grass cattle being available than has been the- ease in recent years, prices for feeders are ranging higher, and indications are that livestock producere, on the Pacific Paci-fic Coast, particularly are facing an era of prosperity due to the excellent condition of their cattle and entering the fall montha with an abundance of feed. '. " " The heralded shortage of cattle may serve to disrupt the orderly pro. cedure of marketing temporarily , as it has caused a rush to the country to fill cattle requirements, a tendency on the part of' the buyera which, of course, does not serve to stabilize marketing conditions. This situation will Iron Itself out and if the cattle movement is allow ed to proceed through It a natural outlets there would appear to be nothing but a healthy condition in the Industry with an adequate aupply to fill the demand which, of course, is a satisfactory situation both from the standpoint of the -packer, producer San Francisco, August 24th, 1927. ' XftaiVa Poultry Industry -The poultry Induatry of Utah Is through ths pioneering stages) but tt has not passed the point where it can thrive as It should without the moral support of ail who are Interested in the fullest economlo advancement of Utah. It has been four yearsjOncs the Centfal Utah Poultry Exchange at Gunnison, later to become the Utah Poultry Producers Co-operative As. aociatlon, a statewide marketing or-ganixatlon or-ganixatlon managed by about .1800 farnvsrs 7 operating poultry- - flocks, started in a small way to see If out-side out-side markets, chiefly California, would be Interested in taking Utah eggs. That stop was somewhat of, an emerKency as well as an experiment There was a surplus in ine uunuaon Valley which the Salt Lake and Ogden and Prove markets could not care for. So, it was a question of getting an outside buyer or writing down the rear's operations as a loss. From that humble start the Idea spread rapidly. Apparently the home folks did tiot appreciate how high quality these Utah eggs wer. Boon the Utah Poultry Producer Co-opere-tiv started shlpplag to New York. Later Is onened Its own branch ex change there. Now It baa contacts all over the United States. Frequent, ly the demand for Utah eggs Is great, er than the supply. " Even In periods of depressed markets, the Utah Co-op. erative has been able to obtain the beat prices for Its membefs, because of the unquestionably high quality ot the eggs produced In this state and because of Its extensive contacts at principal markets. If la an old. story, Utah's growth in five years from an eggjm porting state to one in which the poultry tnduatry returned to producers 13,770,000 last year. Few states have displayed such rapid, yet wholly substantial, growth, Tet Utahna seem to be taking the development, de-velopment, in a matter -of -fact manner. man-ner. :.V-..-.- k , It la that they are looking far Into the future T Do they vision a day when the industry will be many times its present size? The officials of the Co-operative say this is not an Idle dream and that Utahna are not to be ridiculed for vlalonlng a time when the industry will return upwards of 120,000,000. Not to be satisfied with the present, is a wholsome condition, providing one is building tor a great. er future, as are Utahns In the poultry poul-try business at tils time. Utah offers all the conditions that afe necessary to production of good poultry products. Her people are recognizing It and getting into the business.
