The other day h newcomer id to a representative of this newspaper: news-paper: "I hope the business I have started hpre will prove a success, not only from the dollar and cent standpoint, but beenuse I likti Anniii an Fork and would ask nothing better than tq live the remainder of my lift- in your charming town." ': 1 A little later another comparatively new resident Kaid. after hearing hear-ing a nasty "knock" on the. town : "I wonder if these folks go away froiirtmnu'. I think .they do not for the reason that if they did there would be fewer complaint about American Fork. I have lived in many cities and I am frank to say that American Fork has my vote as a place of permanent residence. resid-ence. There are so many admirable things about your town and so few of the other kind that I feel the knockers are mere chronic com-plainers com-plainers who are ignorant of the virtues, by comparison, of their own city." . That set us to thinking. v When two liH'n express the same view the likelihood is that many others are thinkinga long similar lines. There are many "mute inglorious in-glorious Miltons" who do not know how to tell the world what is in their minds and for them we sing this little song. "We wonder how ninny home folks pause to recount the good things of American Fork and we are glad to hear the newcomers praising it. for it makes us understand that while sometimes it is necessary to find fault, after all. the city is not going to the demitioc bow -wows- and we can say as a certain distinguished Koman once remarked : " I am a citizen of no mean eitv." t 5 i THE PAIL TEST FOR AN INVESTMENT The experienced, farmer can pick a. good iiiikh cow by sight and touch. Hy "sight" und 44 feel" lie can scparHtcV'afyiiost invariably, the Rcrub from the pedigreed herd. In additon. there's the pail test that determines a good milker. It is simply a question of knowing the principles that apply. Hut neither by sight nor touch can the investment in-vestment amateur pick the scrubs in securities. Worthless securities'. Which are backed by nothing more substantial than fanciful prpmises. are often just as beautifully engraved on just as good paper as are the honest securities which will "stand up" under the hazards that every business faces. Behind money-making securities is something more important in judging investment values than the things which you can see nud feel the steel rails, great generating- plants, machinery, .massive terminals, the various' commodities and other assets. Without earning earn-ing power, which is determined by the honesty and ability of the men in the business, great factories would be lifeless and worthless. It is this ability to make money year after yeart that the banker or the ex perieneed investor looks for when buying investment securities. The pail test of a good investment and a good cow is the fact that each "lias proved Us ability to give down, milk or money. When the investor in-vestor looks for earning power and honesty in seeuriites. he will pick, almost invariably, investments of pedigreed stork, and he will go a long way toward keeping tke "boarders" out of bis investment list.
